William Randal McClure, 70

W. Randal McClure, affectionately known as Randy, passed away on August 29, 2023, at the age of 70. He was born on November 2, 1952, in Trenton, New Jersey, but spent his formative years in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania. Randy’s life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family, his many close friendships and his faithful focus on living his best life. Randy earned his Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He joked that his degree made him a “Jack of all trades, but a master of none.” He remained an avid Pitt fan and season…


PHOTOS: Panthers Downed By South Side 35-7

Riverside opened up its regular season Friday night, but the Panthers fell at home to South Side by a score of 35-7. After a 12-yard touchdown run by Brady Newman tied the game in the second quarter, the visiting Beavers scored 28 unanswered points to secure the road victory. Robbie Janis led the Panthers with 96 yards rushing on 12 carries, while Ryan Theadore collected 49 yards passing in defeat. Zach Hare hauled in a team-high four receptions for 34 yards for Riverside. The Panthers (0-1 Overall) next travels to Shenango on Friday for a non-conference tilt.


Ellwood City Falls to Union Area 34-21

Ellwood City saw two, early 14-point advantages disappear on Friday as the Wolverines fell to Union Area 34-21 at Helling Stadium. The Wolverines collected the first two scores of the contest and a momentum-swinging 90-yard fumble return by Deklan O’Brien put Ellwood City ahead 21-7 midway through the second quarter. However, the Wolverine offense stalled in the second half and the visiting Scotties roared back with 27 unanswered points to earn the victory. GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: After falling to Blackhawk earlier in the week, the Ellwood City Girls Volleyball team rebounded for victory Wednesday. The victory evens the Wolverines early season record at 1-1. On Tuesday, Ellwood City exchanged set victories with the Bridgers and gained the match with a 15-13 5th set victory. The Wolverines won set 1 (25-12) and set 3 (25-17). On Monday, the girls battled back from an early two set deficit against Blackhawk but fell 3-2 in the season opening match. POLICE: Weekly Police Blotter

CRIMINAL TRESPASSING: On August 26th at approximately 10:15 p.m., PA State Police were dispatched to Young Road, Slippery Rock Township, for a burglary in progress. According to the report, it was determined that after dropping someone off at the residence, Timothy Myers, 42, attempted to enter the residence through multiple doors and windows. Myers was confronted by the homeowner and advised that police were on the way, and he left prior to State Police arriving the report relates. Hack Wilson Marker Dedicated

The Ellwood City Area Historical Society hosted a lively ceremony to dedicate the new Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission roadside marker on Woodside Avenue (State Route 65) honoring Ellwood City-born Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Lewis Robert “Hack” Wilson on Friday August 25, 2023 at the Lincoln High School Baseball Field in Ewing Park. PHOTOS – Panther Night 2023

Riverside School District held its annual Panther Night Thursday evening at Riverside Memorial Stadium. The program included the introduction of the Panthers fall sports programs and the Riverside marching band. The Panthers football team will have its first home game on Friday, September 1st versus South Side at Riverside Memorial Stadium.  The Panthers also host Ellwood City in the annual Riv-Ell game scheduled for Friday, October 27th.
