Lady Wolverines Knock Off Section Leading Lancers

Just days after the boys basketball team defeated Neshannock, the Ellwood City girls basketball team went on the road and upset the section-leading Lady Lancers 67-60 Thursday night.

Five Wolverines scored in double figures in the sound victory as Ellwood City led throughout the contest in handing the Lancers (11-5 Overall, 5-1 Section 3A-1) their first section loss.

Delaney Sturegon scored a team-high 16 points to pace the Wolverines offense. Elsie Sturgeon scored 14 points and Claire Noble posted 13 points in the victory. Kayla Jones and Caitlin Kreitzer each connected on two 3-pointers and finished with 12 points respectively.

Ellwood City posted 49 first half points, including 27 in an impressive second quarter . The Wolverines made their first eight shots of the quarter and finished 12-15 from the field in the second quarter alone. Delaney Sturgeon poured in 12 points in the frame.

Along with Neshannock, both teams combined to shoot 76% from the field in the quarter.

The third quarter was a stark difference as both teams combined for only 14 points.  Ellwood City led 55-47 after three quarters and held on for the road victory.

Payton Newman scored a game-high 23 points in defeat for Neshannock.

The Wolverines improve to 12-6 Overall with a 4-2 Section 3A-1 record and can clinch a playoff berth with a victory next Monday in the Riv-Ell Cup game versus Riverside.

Thursday night’s victory also avenges a loss to Neshannock earlier this month and may provide an opportunity for Ellwood City to capture the section title.

RIVERSIDE 43 SHENANGO 30

Camryn Friello scored 18 points as Riverside defeated Shenango 43-30 on Wednesday.  Riverside scored 28 second half points to recover from a one point half time deficit.  Friello connected on four 3-pointers in the victory.  DeLana Fox posted a double-double, recording 14 points and 12 rebounds while Gigi Finch collected six rebounds, eight assists, and four steals for the Lady Panthers.   Riverside next travels to Ellwood City on Monday for the Riv-Ell Cup game against the Wolverines.
