Ellwood City’s last Pearl Harbor Survivor, Staff Sgt Joseph Michael Gasper passed away in his home on December 20, 2020. Joe, the youngest of three children from Hungarian immigrants Michael Gasper and Mary (Pollack) Gasper, was born April 23, 1918 in Zelienople PA. As a teen growing up during the Great Depression, he left home after his mother died to help support his family. He worked with the Ringling Bros Circus and then became a part of Franklin Roosevelt’s fledgling Civilian Conservation Corps. He sent money home every month to his family. Edward Raymond Gasper, 75, of West Pittsburg PA, passed away August 11, 2020 at Cadia Healthcare in Hagerstown, MD following a lengthy illness. Born November 26, 1944 in Ellwood City, PA, he was the son of the late Vincent T. Sr. and Margaret (Eckler) Gasper. Edward was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing. He enjoyed attending NASCAR races. He was a truck driver and was proud of being a teamster. He also liked going to the casino. Gerald Lee Gasper, 66, of Beaver Falls passed away in the comfort of his home on June 15th after a 3 1/2 year battle with mesothelioma. Born November 22, 1953 in Ellwood City he was the son of the late Vincent T. Gasper, Sr. and Margaret (Eckler) Gasper and a stepmother, Irvina (Wright) Gasper. Our area’s last World War II Pearl Harbor Survivor will turn 102 years of age on Thursday, April 23. In conjunction with the birthday celebration for Ellwood City native Joseph Michael Gasper, Mayor Anthony J. Court is honoring Mr. Gasper with a proclamation. Ellwood City Mayor Anthony J. Court proclaimed December 7, 2019 as “Joseph Gasper Day.” Court presented a proclamation to Gasper, a Pearl Harbor Survivor. Gasper is our area’s last World War II Pearl Harbor Survivor. “Mr. Gasper is a War Hero,” Court said. The mayor was joined in the presentation by Samuel Teolis, a main representative of all veterans in Ellwood City. Richard Strohecker, 78, of Ellwood City, passed away on Sunday, June 30, 2024 at UPMC Jameson. Born in Ellwood City on October 3, 1945, Richard was the son of the late Clark and Irvina Wright Strohecker. Richard owned and operated Strohecker Sealcoating and Paving. He previously worked at B&W Steel and also drove truck. Richard is survived by his wife, the former Marylu Harper, who he married on July 1, 1995.
