Kay Panella, 74

Kay (Tarver) Panella, 74, passed away in her home with her family by her side on September 2, 2024 following an extended illness.

She was born September 17, 1949.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Donice Hughey and Alcus Tarver, her brothers John and Tom Tarver, and brother-in-law Jim Croston.

Kay made the world a more beautiful place both figuratively and physically with the care she provided to those in need, the haircuts, color, and stylings she performed as a beautician for many years, and her remarkable ability to design, develop, and decorate any area she felt needed a little something. She took great pride in her fashion, jewelry, hair and makeup; some even say she was the prettiest girl out of Koppel. Her work ethic was strong. Kay found herself in multiple professions throughout the years, but her true passion was serving individuals diagnosed with a mental health disorder as a Certified Peer Specialist at Merakey LTSR where she made a difference in the lives of many. Her genuine compassion, understanding and love for this population was inspiring; she was often lovingly referred to by the residents as “Mother.” Her only greater love was for her children and grandchildren.

Kay is survived by her husband, Ben Panella. Her children, Louise and Doug McKinney; Kelly and Joe Nardone. Her grandchildren Katelyn McKinney; Julia, Carlo, and Joey Nardone. Her siblings, Barbara Croston, Kenny Tarver and sisters in law Hilda Tarver, Patty Smail, and Gloria Port. Special members of her stepfamily include Billie Jo, Michael, Vinny, Mike and Krystina Wyant and their children; Robin and Ransom Luffman; Jared (Becah) Mitrea, Hannah (Pawan) Ghimire and their daughter, and Rachel (David) Fobes and their sons.

The family would like to thank Family Hospice, part of UPMC, for their support during this time. When discussing her decline in health, she perked up and said, “I hope you are discussing something pleasant for yourself because you deserve it. You all have been so great to me.” The family could not agree more. In lieu of monetary donations or flowers, the family asks that you take a step in reducing the stigma of mental health however you best see fit and/or do something beautiful that makes a difference to at least one person in her honor.

In keeping with her wishes, there will be no memorial service.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Marshall Funeral Home, Wampum.
