Unbeaten Western Beaver (7-0, 4-0 Section 2A-2) knocked off host Ellwood City 29-12 Friday night at Helling Stadium.
Sydney Woodhead was crowned homecoming queen at halftime. Jackson Kerr was crowned Homecoming King at a pep rally on Thursday.
Standout junior running back Wyatt Sparbanie went down with an injury in the first quarter but the visiting Golden Beavers leaned on two additional supplies of offensive in the conference victory.
Running back Braden Mayo rushed for two second half touchdowns and quarterback Amari Marshall finished with 198 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.
Sparbanie, who is one of the WPIAL’s top running backs, entered the contest with 851 yards on 64 carries and 19 TD through six games. The backer recorded a 58 yard scamper Friday before leaving with the injury.
The teams exchanged scores in the first half with Richard Cureton and Guilian Frisk collecting rushing touchdowns for the Wolverines who trailed just 13-12 at halftime.
Western Beaver however forced three-straight three-and-outs to begin the second half and added a pair of fourth-down stands in fourth quarter to hold Ellwood City scoreless in the second half.
Cureton led Ellwood City with 79 rushing on 16 carries while quarterback Tyler Smiley finished 12-20 passing for 98 yards. Six Wolverine receivers caught passes led by DOm Hogue who hauled in three passes for 36 yards. Defensively, DaiLonn Currie nabbed an interception while Tyler Smiley collected a fumble recovery. Colton Gullo recorded a team high eight tackles including five tackles-for-loss.
Ellwood City (3-4, 2-2 MAC) will next host rival Riverside on Friday night at part of its Senior Night festivities. The Golden Beavers victory avenges a 2024 loss to an unbeaten Ellwood City team.
