PLAYOFFS! EC Basketball Teams Have Opening Round Match-Ups Announced

For the first time in 25 years, both the Ellwood City boys and girls basketball teams have qualified for their respective WPIAL Playoffs in the same season. The Ellwood City boys (15-7 Overall, 9-3 Section 3A-1), winners of five consecutive games and 10 of their last 11 games, earned a 9-seed in the WPIAL Class 3A Playoffs and will face Washington on Monday, February 19th. William “Bill” L. Atkinson Jr., 80

Mr. William “Bill” L. Atkinson Jr. of Ellwood City passed away on Sunday, February 11th, 2024 at the Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh following a 3-year illness. William was born in New Castle on July 10, 1943 to the late William L. and Margaret (Hinkle) Atkinson Sr.. Bill graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1962 and earned an Associate Degree from the Beaver County Community College. Catherine Theresa (Klemenz) Shuttleworth, 89, of Wampum died on Sunday February 11, 2024 at home surrounded by many family members. Catherine was born in Philadelphia on October 10, 1934, the daughter of the late Kathryn and Joseph Klemenz. Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 65 years, William (Bill) Shuttleworth on December 17, 2020, a son-in-law, William J Fleck and a daughter-in-law, Regina Santamaria Shuttleworth. Vincent J. Gottuso, an 88-year-old resident of Ellwood City, gracefully departed this world on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at Passavant Lutheran Senior Life. Born on August 12, 1935 in Ellwood City to the late Joseph and Elizabeth DeMauro Gottuso, Vincent’s journey was marked by significant achievements and a passion for a Christian life. Graduating from Lincoln High School in 1953, he went on to earn a degree in Industrial Engineering from Geneva College in 1959. INMETCO Declares Bankruptcy

For the second time in less than a decade, INMETCO has filed bankruptcy. The Ellwood City recycling plant filed a Chapter 7 bankruptcy in the Western District of Pennsylvania bankruptcy court on January 31, 2024. According to published reports, eight employees were kept on at the plant after the initial round of layoffs in October and affected workers received no severance pay. In 2015, former parent company Horsehead announced INMETCO was expanding its facilities with a $10 million dollar project. Later in 2015, a fire broke out and raged at the Ellwood City facility. Charles Wallace Evans, 76, passed peacefully on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 after a brief battle with illness. He was born in Ellwood City Pennsylvania. Charles was a happy resident of Mercer, Pennsylvania were he lived with his loving wife, Kelley Evans. He leaves behind three daughters, Rachelle, Heather and Denise and son, Rory. He also leaves behind five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Glenda Evans; son, Wally Evans and daughter, Rebecca Evans. Brown Announces Area Career and Technical School Receives Grant

HARRISBURG – Rep. Joseph Roth is now the all-time leading scorer in Ellwood City boys basketball history. The senior knocked down a free throw midway through the second quarter that gave him 1,939 career points, breaking the career scoring record previously held by Dan Aloi. Roth finished with 18 points in the 73-45 rivalry victory over Riverside Friday night.
