ELLWOOD Celebrates Manufacturing Week With Visits To Lawrence County High Schools

]New Castle, PA] – For the second straight year, ELLWOOD celebrated Manufacturing Week with a tour of Lawrence County area high schools, talking with area students about the many manufacturing career opportunities available in the community.

ELLWOOD partnered with Lawrence County School-to-Work to coordinate the effort of visiting every high school in the county over the five-day period, reaching more than 1,000 students.

The initiative is a lead-up to today’s Manufacturing Day, a nationally recognized day reserved by manufacturers to engage students. Manufacturing Day is celebrated each year on the first Friday in October and is the manufacturing industry’s biggest opportunity to educate students, inspire the next generation of creators and promote the many career opportunities available in manufacturing.

Last year, ELLWOOD expanded the idea to Manufacturing Week and worked with each high school in Lawrence County as well as Beaver County’s Riverside High School to present to as many students as possible.

“The school visits are a great opportunity to get in front of students to not only educate them about the careers available in their community, but to answer their questions about who we are and what we do at ELLWOOD,” said Dena Baptiste, Director of Human Resources with ELLWOOD.

“Lawrence County School-To-Work is an exceptional partner, and our area high schools are always very welcoming as each played a key role in the success of this week.”

ELLWOOD has five locations in Lawrence County and is the area’s largest manufacturer and manufacturing employer. The 30-minute presentations highlight the company’s many divisions, ELLWOOD’s team members and the impact ELLWOOD steel has throughout the country and around the world. Area students learned of the many industries that rely on ELLWOOD every day such as power generation, aerospace, mining, defense and more.

“This is the second year we have taken this program to the schools and each year as we present you can see the interest of the students grow as the groups start to understand what our facilities do and the impact we have nationally and globally.” said Quyrus Epps, Director of Team Member Relations with ELLWOOD.

“Lawrence County has such a wealth of talent and as the area’s largest manufacturing employer we are excited to be able to talk with these students and give them a better understanding of local opportunities.”

Two schools were scheduled each day throughout the week of Monday, October 2 – Friday, October 6, beginning with visits to Wilmington and Neshannock High Schools on Monday. Tuesday started with a morning visit with Ellwood City Lincoln High School and an afternoon talk at the Lawrence County Career and Technical Center and Wednesday the ELLWOOD group visited with Shenango and Union High Schools. Thursday New Castle and Mohawk High Schools were scheduled for morning visits and the tour concluded with stops at Laurel High School and Riverside High School on Friday.
