Ellwood Quality Steels Celebrates Milestone

ELLWOOD Quality Steels (EQS) on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, celebrated a significant milestone by producing the 250,000th heat in the melt shop that opened in 1985.

A heat is a batch of steel that is melted in the 45-ton electric arc furnace and poured into molds to create bottom-poured ingots. EQS is a leading producer of carbon, alloy, tool and stainless steel ingots that support forging, ring rolling and heavy plate applications in sophisticated and critical products for the aerospace, defense, space, and energy industries. For the most demanding applications, the ingots are further refined by melting a second time in EQS’ Vacuum Arc Remelt (VAR) or ElectroSlag Remelt (ESR) furnaces which were installed in 2019.

“This is an incredible accomplishment for EQS and for the entire ELLWOOD Group,” said EQS president Mike Morgus. “Completing a quarter of a million heats through our melt shop is a
testament to our hardworking team members, our commitment to quality, and our customers’ confidence in our ability to provide them a competitive advantage in their markets.

“I would like to extend a thank you to our customers who put their faith in us and to our more than 230 team members who work diligently every day to ensure EQS remains North America’s leading supplier of high-quality steel ingots.”

EQS, a Pennsylvania Business Trust, is part of ELLWOOD Group, a vertically integrated supplier of quality metals and custom-engineered components for critical applications worldwide,
providing products to customer specifications for the world’s most demanding requirements, including those supporting our nation’s defense.
