Three games in, three double-doubles for Joseph Roth.
The Ellwood City junior big man has led the young, upstart Wolverines to an early 3-0 regular season record after the Wolverines wrapped up the Laurel Tip-Off tournament by defeating the host Spartans 61-46 Monday night.
Ellwood City will next host its regular season home opener on Friday against the Hopewell Vikings.
The Wolverines tipped off their season Friday night with a 56-35 victory over Rochester at the Geneva College / Midland Tip-Off Classic. Elwood City raced out to an insurmountable 30-10 advantage in the second quarter on their way to easy victory. Roth totaled 29 points and 17 rebounds. Will Nardone joined Roth in double figures with 13 points.
On Saturday, Ellwood City used an equally impressive 20-0 spurt in the second quarter that was instrumental in the Wolverines 58-46 victory over Mercer in the opening game of the Laurel Tipoff Tournament. Roth finished with 27 points and 16 rebounds in game two of the young season. Fellow big man, freshman Aaron Lake, scored 12 points and collected four rebounds.
Finally, on Monday, Ellwood City defeated Laurel behind another large effort by the 6’4″ Roth as he finished with 33 points and 16 rebounds to pace the Wolverines. Nate Williams added seven points (5 rebounds, 4 steals) and while freshman Chris Smiley added six points (3 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 blocks) for the tournament victor Wolverines.
As section play nears for Ellwood City, teams may have to put in to place a sound defensive game plan to account for the Wolverine big man as Roth is averaging 29.7 PPG (89 Points), 16.3 RPG (49 Rebounds) through three games for Ellwood City (3-0 Overall, 0-0 Section).
