PHOTOS: EC Girls Cruise Past Riverside, EC Boys Knock Off Neshannock

The Ellwood City Girls Basketball team used an impressive 23-3 first quarter spurt to cruise to a 47-15 victory over rival Riverside on Tuesday night.

Three Wolverines finished in double figures led by senior guard Kyla Servick who finished with a game-high 12 points.

Saige Chambers (11 points) and Emily Sedgwick (10 points) joined Servick in double figures for an Ellwood City team (7-9 Overall, 4-5 Section 1-3A) that has now collected three consecutive victories.

After the twenty point first quarter advantage, Ellwood City stretched its lead to 29-7 at halftime and 34-9 after three quarters of play.  Riverside (2-12 Overall) was able to outscore the visiting Wolverines 6-4 in the final frame.

Ellwood City next hosts North Catholic (12-4 Overall) on Wednesday before a three game road trip. The Wolverines will host the Lady Panthers on February 10th at Lincoln High School

Ellwood City Boys Knock Off Neshannock

The Ellwood City Boys Baskeball team used an impressive defensive effort Tuesday night to knock off the visiting Lancers 51-32.

The victory, the second over Neshannock this year, improved the Wolverines regular season record to 17-2 overall (7-0 Section 1-3A).

Three Wolverines combined for 49 points – seniors Alexander Roth (12 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists) and Steve Antuono (17 points, four 3-pointers) joined sophomore Joseph Roth (19 points, 13 rebounds 2 blocks 7-7 FTs) in double figures for Ellwood City. Senior Milo Sesti chipped in a three pointers (3 points, 4 assists) for the victors.

The Wolverines stymied Neshannock throughout the first half, leading 9-5 after one quarter and 24-8 at halftime after allowing only three field goals in the half.

Lancer forward Mike Sopko, subject to much defensive attention by senior Anthony Spadafore, was held scoreless in the first half.  Sopko scored all 10 of his points in the final frame for Neshannock (13-4 Overall).

Ellwood City, who hasn’t lost since before Christmas, next travels to play Mohawk on Friday before returning to its home court on February 8th for its senior night game versus Beaver Falls.
