“Splash Brothers” Alexander and Joseph Roth combined to score 43 points Friday night to power the visiting Wolverines to a 56-34 victory over Neshannock.
In a rematch of last year’s WPIAL Class-3A playoff semifinal, Ellwood City led the wire to wire for the impressive road victory in the match-up of two loss section foes. The Wolverines had previously upset the 2-seeded Lancers in last year’s WPIAL Championship run.
Tonight, the Roth brothers combined for all 25 first half points for Ellwood City with senior Alexander collecting eight first quarter points while sophomore Joseph poured in nine second quarter points for the Wolverines who held a 25-15 halftime lead.
Behind a stout defensive effort, Ellwood City then used an impressive 17-4 third quarter margin to stretch out the half time advantage en route to victory.
Alexander Roth finished with a game high 23 points (eight rebounds, four assists) while Joseph collected a double-double (20 points, 11 rebounds). The two combined to connect on six 3-pointers.
Senior Steve Antuono was quiet for the first three quarters but poured in all eight of his points in the final frame to aid in the Wolverine victory.
Sebastian Cairo finished with a team high nine points for Neshannock (7-3 overall) in defeat.
Ellwood City (9-2 overall, 2-0 Section 1-3A) will continue section play with a match-up at Mohawk next Tuesday.
