Wolverines Cruise To Christmas Tournament Championship

Ellwood City traveled north for the Mercer Christmas Tournament and found no resistance in District 10 as the Wolverines earned the tournament championship Tuesday evening.

The defending WPIAL Class-3A Champions defeated Saegertown 77-36 on Monday and then host Mercer 74-49 on Tuesday.

The Splash Brothers, Alexander and Joseph Roth, each scored 47 points over the two-game tournament. Senior Alexander had a game-high 24 points Monday while sophomore Joseph scored a game-high 25 points Tuesday in the championship game.

On Monday, the Wolverines raced out to an early 20-9 first quarter lead over Saegertown and led comfortably 38-19 at halftime. Joseph Roth scored 17 first half points while Alexander Roth connected on four second half 3-pointers to help Ellwood City run away with the victory. Steve Antuono scored 15 points (two 3-pointers, 7 assists) and Caden Crizer chipped in with nine points.  Senior Milo Sesti contributed 10 assists and six steals. Alexander finished with six 3-pointers in the contest as the Wolverines finished with nine triples as a team.

On Tuesday, and in similar fashion, Ellwood City jumped out to an early lead and cruised to victory.  The Wolverines led 23-9 after one quarter of play and then rattled off 17 points in each of the final three quarters to keep Mercer at bay.

Six Wolverines netted points in the pivotal first quarter. The team also tickled the twine from deep to the tune of nine 3-pointers in the contest.

Alexander Roth led the outside attack finishing with five 3-pointers en route to his 23 point effort. Joseph Roth scored 13 of his 25 points (13 rebounds, three blocks) in the second half. Caden Crizer joined the Splash Brothers in double figures with 13 points (two 3-pointers, four assists). Milo Sesti filled the stat sheet with six points, four rebounds and four assists.

Ellwood City is now 7-2 on its season and will open up section play Tuesday, January 4 versus rival Riverside at home with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
