Mayor Anthony J. Court is alerting residents of Ellwood City to be on alert for a recent string of vandalism and ‘porch pirate’ thefts of packages in the Ellwood City area.
The latest incident of porch piracy was a reported theft of a package dropped off by Amazon at a residence in Ewing Park.
“This behavior will not be tolerated and any individual or individuals will be prosecuted to the fullest extend of the law,” says Court.
Will holiday shopping season approaching, Mayor Court is asking residents to be on the look out for abnormal behavior and report details to the Ellwood City Police Department as soon as possible.
Additionally, Mayor Court received phone calls for individuals throwing eggs at homes and vehicles in the Franklin Avenue area of Ellwood City.
“I’m amazed at the total disregard for other people’s personal belongings and property,” concludes Court.
The term porch pirate is used to refer to people who steal packages from other people’s homes and is a huge issue in the United States. According to ZDnet.com, over 1.7 million packages stolen or lost every day and getting refunds is difficult. Only 54% of porch piracy victims were refunded when reporting a package as stolen. A survey has shown that an average of 29% of Americans reported having had a package stolen from their porch, front door or mailbox.
