Two weeks ago, the Wolverines were able to erase a six run deficit to defeat Avonworth, but on Saturday there would be no comeback as the Antelopes scored 14 consecutive runs to turn a 2-2 tie into a 16-4 rout.
The mercy rule ended the game after 5 innings. The game started out as a back and forth affair as Avonworth took the lead with a two run homer off the bat of Kubin in the second inning.
Ellwood City tied things up in their next at bat on a solo homer by Aliya Garroway, Mollie Street walked , and an rbi single by Kali Barnett.
The Antelopes scored 14 runs in the third and fourth innings to go up 16-2. Needing five runs to continue past the fifth inning, the Wolverines put up a fight with two runs. Garroway led off with a single and scored on a double by Street. Barnett plated Street with a single to right center but that would be the extent of the threat and Ellwood City suffered their third loss of the season.
Five players combined for eight hits on the day. Garroway led the way with a homer, double and single. Barnett added two rbi singles and Street had an rbi double. Julia Nardone and Makinley Magill each contributed a single to the cause. Julia Nardone took the loss as she struck out 3 and walked 4. She yielded 12 hits and 6 earned runs as the defense committed 3 errors on the day.
The Wolverines (9-3 overall, 4-3 Section) will next host South Park on Tuesday for Senior Night. The game will start at 5:00 p.m.
