Riverside Runs Over Rival Ellwood City, 27-12

Riverside used the ground attack to run over the host Wolverines 27-12 Friday night at Helling Stadium.

Calvin Hughes led the ground attack for Riverside finishing with 169 yards rushing on 28 carries and a score while quarterback Sam Hughes scored twice on the ground and finished with 41 yards rushing for the victorious Panthers.

Brody Barton barged in for a third rushing touchdown for Riverside (2-4 overall), who finished with night with 319 rushing yards as a team on 54 attempts.

After the teams exchanged scores in the second quarter, Riverside capitalized on a 30-yard touchdown connection from Sam Hughes to Calvin Hughes and the Barton 2-yard run to stretch its lead to 20-6 at halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter, Ellwood City (0-6 overall) made it a one possession game in the fourth quarter with a Ashton Wilson 3-yard touchdown run. But Riverside was able to ice the game late as Sam Hughes scored his second rushing touchdown of the contest and put Riverside ahead by the final mark of 27-12.

In an all around effort for the Wolverines, Wilson finished with a rushing touchdown run as well as six catches for 55 yards in defeat. Quarterback Ryan Gibbons plunged in for a 1-yard score in the second quarter and threw for 75 yards.

Defensively, Zach Gatto led the Wolverines with 12 tackles while Calvin Hughes finished with 10 total tackles for Riverside. Panther Mason Glevicky collected the lone interception of the contest.

The rivalry game was part of Ellwood City senior night festivities. Both teams, each out of playoff contention, will finish their respective seasons on the road next Friday as Riverside will travel to New Brighton (4-2 overall) while Ellwood City will travel to play Laurel (4-2 overall).
