The Ellwood City Girls Varsity tennis team came away with a 4-1 victory over rival Riverside on Monday. The visiting Wolverines used strong efforts by Maddy McCommons in singles play and Cassidy Navolio and Anna Williams in doubles to earn the victory.
Maddy McCommons collected a straight set victory (6-0, 6-1) and Nichole Bartolomeo also collected a singles victory (6-2, 3-6, 6-1) for Ellwood City. Navolio & Williams (6-4, 7-5) secured their doubles victory along with Alex Johnston & Rylea Heitzenrater (6-2, 3-6, 6-1) for Ellwood City. Riverside’s Brooke Verrico defeated Molly McCommons in singles play (6-4, 3-6, 7-5) for the lone Riverside victory. Ellwood City is now 3-1 on the season and next play Beaver Falls on Wednesday in Ewing Park.
The Ellwood City girls volleyball stayed undefeated on the young season with a 3-0 victory over Freedom last week. The girls used match victories of 25-9, 25-11, and 25-8 to easily dispatch the Freedom Bulldogs. Junior varsity also collected a 3-0 victory.
Ellwood City (3-0 overall) next hosts Shenango Wildcats on Tuesday at Lincoln High School.
