PHOTOS: EC 12U Softball Team Defeats Wilmington, Wins Regular Season Title With Record Of 12-2

The Lady Wolverines put together another solid team effort and defeated Wilmington on Tuesday evening in a battle for the #1 seed. Ellwood City came away with a hard fought 6-4 victory.

Ellwood City got the scoring started in the top of the 1st inning. Kennedy Brown led off the game with a walk and stole second base. She advanced to third on an infield single by Amber McQuistion and scored on an rbi groundout by Sara Schwarz.

Wilmington tied it in the bottom half of the inning with a single, stolen base and a run scoring single.

The second would see Ellwood City grab the lead at 2-1. Kaylee Palombi hit a one out triple into right center field and scored on an infield single by Lexi Beck.

The Wolverines made it 3-1 in the 3rd with some two out lightning. Catcher Natalee Gillin singled. Emma Bogacki came in to pinch run and immediately stole second base. After moving over to third on a wild pitch, Bogacki alertly stole home as she caught the pitcher and catcher napping.

Wilmington came right back to tie things up in the bottom half of the inning as they plated two runs with a single, fielding error, and a throwing error. With the go ahead run on third base and one out, starting pitcher Amber McQuistion slammed the door with back to back strikeouts.

The Lady Wolverines went up for good with a pair of runs in the 5th inning. Brown led off with a single into left field and advanced to second on another infield single by McQuisiton. After both runners moved up on a wild pitch and a walk to Schwarz, Bogacki plated two runs with a hard shot single into left field with the bases juiced.

The lead increased to 6-3 in the sixth as Beck hit a one out single into left field. She would advance to third on back to back wild pitches and scored the sixth run of the game on a fielding error by the first baseman off of the bat of Mcquistion.

Wilmington attempted their comeback in the bottom of the 7th as they plated a run. The first two batters reached base via single and a base on balls. After a wild pitch, the Greyhounds had runners on second and third with the tying run at the plate. Bogacki got out of the jam by retiring the next three hitters with a strikeout, rbi groundout, and another strikeout.

After a shaky third inning that saw the Wolverines give up two runs with two errors, the defense was lights out for the remainder of the game. Left fielder Ava Dausman made the play of the game as she started a double play. With the leadoff batter on first base in the fifth inning, she ran down a line drive in the left center field gap and then threw back across the field to complete the double play at first. Dakota Hicks led the infield with two ground ball assists while Bogacki and Mcquistion each had one. Gillin threw out a runner attempting to steal second in the first inning.

Offensively, six players combined for eight hits on the night. Mcquisiton and Beck contributed two hits apiece while Palombi blasted a triple. Bogacki, Brown, and Gillin all added singles. Bogacki drove in a pair while Beck and Schwarz each drove in one. Brown scored twice and McQuistion, Bogacki, Palombi, and Beck all scored once.

Bogacki got the win in the circle as she and McQuistion combined on a six hitter. McQuistion went the first three innings and fanned 6. She walked 1 and gave up three runs, one earned. Bogacki went the final four innings and fanned 7, She walked two and gave up one run.

The Lady Wolverines will start playoff action Monday night as New Castle comes to Merit Book Park. First pitch is set for 6pm.
