Steve Antuono erupted for 27 points to help the Ellwood City earn a 58-47 road victory over New Brighton on Tuesday.
The Wolverines used a decisive fourth quarter to pull away from the Lions. Ellwood lead by one point and halftime and after the teams exchanged 13-point third quarters, continued to hold a one-point lead until the Wolverines outscored New Brighton 27-17 in the final frame to secure victory.
Nate Coonfare chipped in with 16 points for the Wolverines. Antuono finished 11-15 from the free-throw line and connected on two 3-pointers.
On Wednesday, the Wolverines were met with a dose of their own medicine. Union’s Vince Fuleno caught fire from deep, collecting nine 3-pointers to lead the Scotties to a 59-42 non-section victory over Ellwood City. Fuleno’s nine triples accounted for his entire 27-point total and the outburst comes on the heels of a six 3-pointer effort on Tuesday for the Scotties.
Antuono scratched double digits, finishing with a team-high 10 points for the Wolverines while Alexander Roth collected two 3-pointers in finishing with eight points in defeat.
Ellwood City (8-8 overall) will next host Beaver Falls in section play and host a non-section Saturday tilt against Shenango.
For the Panthers, a wire-to-wire 61-47 victory on Wednesday over Freedom was aided by a 30-point scoring outburst by Kevin Kolesar. Riverside led by only three points entering the fourth quarter but stretched out their margin of victory with a 23-point fourth quarter. Kolesar was joined in double figures by Panther guard Nathan Sciarro who finished with 17 points.
On Tuesday, a last-second bucket proved the difference-maker in their grueling 58-56 defeat at the hands of section foe Neshannock. Kolesar again provided the scoring punch, finishing with a game-high 21 points for Riverside.
The Panthers (7-10 overall) next travel to New Brighton on Friday for a section match-up with the Lions.
