Ellwood City native and graduate Nicholas “Nick” Ioanilli is in the midst of his senior year at Colgate and has been stirring up the football world since his freshman year. Ioanilli was a three-year letterman and senior captain of the Wolverines Football team during his time here in Ellwood.
With those efforts he went ahead was awarded as the Colgate Gordon Watson Scout Team Defensive Player of the Year in 2016. He played 10 games as a true freshman in 2016 which prepped him to take over as a starter at inside linebacker as a sophomore when an injury opened up a spot. During his sophomore year, he started nine games, had a team-high of 62 tackles and he had picked off three passes. Ioanilli assisted in a final defeat of Lafayette in a 27-0 game after he received his first interception and took it back 33 yards for a touchdown
Junior year for Ioanilli consisted of starting all 12 season games, went 10-2, and gained Colgate its second straight Patriot League title. Only this time, they received a berth to the Division I FCS playoffs and got to host a second-round game, which they won on a last-second field goal. As a senior, he moved to the strongside linebacker stop and took over the team’s defense’s primary play-caller. He received Patriot League recognition for both academics and athletics and has recently traveled to Fort Worth, Texas, to participate in the College Gridiron Small School Showcase.
While his senior season is over, his career isn’t. Ioanilli has been presented a Commendation from Council President Judith Dici for accepting and selecting to play in the FCS Bowl game in Daytona Beach, Florida.
