8th Annual Connoquenessing Creek Cleanup This Weekend

Calling All Volunteers & Supporters!

The 8th Annual Connoquenessing Creek Cleanup is almost here! The first of two cleanup events is scheduled for Saturday, August 24, 2019.

Interested participants can register by contacting Christina Handley at alleghenyaquaticalliance@hotmail.com, (724) 371-0416, or simply just show up!

“Since the start of this important cleanup project 7 years ago, we have gained experience and knowledge that have contributed to a more organized and successful cleanup each year,” said Christina Handley, VP of Allegheny Aquatic Alliance. “In addition, this ongoing project has created many networking opportunities to establish consistent support and sponsors that enable the continuation of it.”

Please help Allegheny Aquatic Alliance restore this important waterway back to its beautiful, natural state by removing the physical garbage that consumes it. So far, the organization has removed over 418,000 pounds of garbage, including 4,455 tires from all 50 miles of the waterway! This has become an ongoing cleanup project since every year flooding carries an enormous amount of new litter and pollution into the creek. Therefore, maintenance cleanups must continue for the success of this project.

This year Allegheny Aquatic Alliance will be returning to the stretch cleaned in 2012 & 2013 in Butler County. The 17-mile section begins in Renfrew and ends in Zelienople. Join the cleanup and in doing a good thing for the environment and community while feeling good and meeting new friends!

“Volunteers are assigned to different teams and tasks. They either work in the water, collecting garbage and using canoes as floating garbage cans or on land loading garbage from boats to trucks to transport to the disposal sites,” said Handley.

Volunteers will receive lunch (donated by Zelienople Subway) snacks, cleanup shirt, and will be invited to the Celebration Party on September 21st at Indian Brave Campground.

The Allegheny Aquatic Alliance was awarded a commemorative plaque by the Borough of Ellwood City last November for their local efforts and continued diligence in the clean up of the Connoqunessing Creek, [READ MORE]

Whena sked how area residents may help prevent litter and pollution reaching the creek, Handley advised, “the biggest source of pollution comes from the annual flooding of the Connie. Many items get swept into the creek so it is important for residents who live in flood zones to properly store their possessions.”
