The Ellwood City Wolverines varsity softball team easily dispatched Hopewell 11-1 on Thursday afternoon at Steifel Park.
The Wolverines tallied five runs in the third inning to blow the game open after being staked to a one-run lead in the first inning. Angie Nardone, Mollie Street, and Kali Barnett all moved runners across the plate with RBIs in the third.
Ellwood City added more offense in the fourth inning – this time by way of the long ball. Maria Ioanilli went yard in the fourth with a two-run bomb to stretch the Wolverines lead further.
Nardone took the win for Wolverines in the mercy-rule shortened contest. She lasted five innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out three and walking one.
Wolverines (7-4 overall) racked up eight hits on the afternoon. Ioanilli and Anna Ferrucci all managed multiple hits for Wolverines while Ariana Garroway walked twice, smacked a double, and scored three times. Kyla Servick also was a contributor with two walks and two runs scored for Ellwood City.
Laney Lewis took the loss for Hopewell. She went four and two-thirds innings, allowing 11 runs on eight hits and striking out four. Isabella Buonaiuto went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead Hopewell in hits.
