Ellwood City Area Historical Society Monthly Meeting and Scholarship Awards

MARTHA GREENE WROTE HER MEMORIES OF THE LOVELY NEW ELLWOOD CITY

At the April membership meeting, Louise Carroll  portrayed Martha Greene, wife of Merritt Greene. Merritt Greene came here in 1889 to serve as the general manager and purchasing agent of the “future resort town” being promoted by Henry W. Hartman, and the Pittsburg Company.  The next year his wife and son moved here to be with him.  They first rented the former Pettit home, then bought it and had it moved across the street.  It was located on what is now Spring Avenue, between 5th and 6th Streets.

The story of the magnificent, infant Ellwood was written by Martha Greene, as a diary and poems.  She so much enjoyed it here, but they moved on to other ventures in Pennsylvania, eventually returning to Marshalltown, Iowa.  Martha died there in 1932.

Their Grand-daughter rewrote the memories of Martha, and sent them the Ellwood City Ledger in 1956. Louise said she is a great believer in getting out of one’s comfort zone and said “I am way out of mine being Mrs. Merritt Greene.”

Helen Bowers showed a 1948 Lincoln High School prom program and a New York souvenir pencil sharpener for Show and Tell. Door Prizes were won by Dr. Anthony DiBiagio,  David Barensfeld, Diane  Neyman and Caleb McQuaid. Refreshments were served by Robert and Cindy Morabito.

The next membership meeting will be 7:00 pm Monday May 14.  The annual Robert and Janice Barensfeld Scholarships will be presented.  The 2018 scholarship winners are Logan Confer, Lincoln High School and Cameron Brown, Riverside High School.

Refreshments will be served.   Come, bring a friend, and also bring an item related to Ellwood City area history for Show and Tell, or, something you have and want to learn more about it.
