The undefeated Avonworth Antelopes scored in extra innings to bounce Ellwood City baseball team on Wednesday while the Avonworth softball team put up a scoring barrage in dismissing the Riverside softball team. Despite two homeruns, the Ellwood City softball team fell to Steel Valley after a 3-run seventh inning proved a third and final lead change.
Ellwood City Wolverines Drops Game to Avonworth After Late Score
The Ellwood City Wolverines baseball team stayed in it until the end, but undefeated Avonworth pulled away late in a 7-5 victory on Wednesday. The game was tied at five with Avonworth batting in the top of the eighth when Ryan Felter doubled on a 2-2 count, scoring the go ahead run.
After trailing by as many as four runs, Ellwood City tallied four runs in the fifth inning. Ellwood City Wolverines put the pressure on, lead by singles by Jake Matheny and Sean Busby, a groundout by Anthony Roth, and an error on a ball put in play by Kyle Smith. Ellwood City tied things up at five when Busby singled on a 3-2 count, scoring one run.
Ryan Hampton took the loss for Ellwood City. He allowed three hits and two runs over one and two-thirds innings, striking out one and walking one.
Turner Grau started the game for Avonworth. He surrendered one run on three hits over three innings, striking out five and walking zero. Noah Rinker started the game for the Wolverines. He allowed five hits and five runs over six and a third innings, striking out four. Matheny led Ellwood City with two hits in four at bats and collected two RBIs in defeat.
Felter was the winning pitcher for Avonworth. He went five innings, allowing four runs on four hits and striking out two.
Avonworth (5-0 overall) tallied eight hits on the day. Miller and Felter each had multiple hits for Avonworth. Miller went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead Avonworth in hits.
Avonworth Captures Lead Early to Defeat Panthers Softball
Riverside Panthers softball team fell behind early and couldn’t come back in an 18-3 loss to Avonworth on Wednesday. Avonworth scored on a single by Helffrich, a walk by Stanley, a walk by Tedesco, a walk by M. Perry, and a wild pitch during Z. Perry’s at bat in the first inning.
The Panthers (1-2 overall) struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Avonworth, giving up 18 runs.
Avonworth scored ten runs in the third inning. The big inning for Avonworth came thanks to singles by Perry, Stanley, and Perry, a home run by Helffrich, and an error on a ball put in play by Raught.
Kozup was the winning pitcher for Avonworth. She lasted four innings, allowing five hits and three runs while striking out five and walking zero. Taryn Schmidt took the loss for Riverside. She surrendered 18 runs on 11 hits over three and two-thirds innings, striking out one.
Emma Beacham went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the Riverside offense. The Panthers scored three runs in the first inning but could not plate another runner thereafter.
Helffrich, Perry, and Marshall all managed multiple hits for Avonworth. Helffrich led Avonworth with three hits in three at bats.
Late Score Costs Lady Wolverines Against Steel Valley
The Wolverines softball team stayed in it until the end, but Steel Valley pulled away late in a 7-5 victory on Wednesday. The game was tied at five with Steel Valley batting in the top of the seventh when Morgan Farrah doubled on a 2-1 count, scoring two runs.
Steel Valley got things moving in the first inning, when Sam Sniegocki singled, knocking in the game’s first run. After Steel Valley scored one run in the top of the third, the Wolverines (1-2 overall) answered with one of their own. Steel Valley scored when Hayley Tate’s sac fly scored one run for the Ironmen. The Wolverines then answered when Anna Ferrucci singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
Wolverines notched three runs in the fourth inning. Reagan Mittler connected with a 3-run home run in the inning to lead put the Wolverines on top. Steel Valley battled back however, as the teams exchanged scores in the fifth and sixth innings.
Wolverines tallied two home runs on the day. Mittler had a dinger in the fourth inning. Maria Ioanilli went deep in the sixth inning. The Wolverines collected nine hits. Ferrucci and Ariana Garroway each collected multiple hits for Wolverines. Ferrucci went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Ellwood City.
Madi Krugh led things on the hill for Wolverines. She went seven innings, allowing seven runs on 13 hits and striking out six.
Steel Valley racked up 13 hits in the game. Farrah, Emily Novak, Sniegocki, and Katie Proof each racked up multiple hits for Steel Valley hile Hayley Tate socked a homerun.
