Riverside Girls Get the Best of Ellwood at Tip Off Tournament

The Lady Panthers and Lady Wolverines both have an exciting season to look forward to. Both teams are returning the core of their members and both teams advanced to playoffs last season but lost the first game.

Ellwood City, Class AAA, is returning five seniors, including lead scorer Karrington Ketterer. Riverside, class AA, returns six seniors. The two teams started the season against each other in a clash Friday night at Lincoln High School. Riverside was ultimately victorious.

20151204_185129The game started off stalemated with the second quarter ending 19-18, in favor of Riverside. Many of the points came from free throws. However, Riverside broke loose in the second half, scoring more than twice that of Ellwood. The Lady Wolverines had no shortage of shots but only nine of 32 field goals found their mark.

“The second half against Ellwood City we moved the ball much better,” Riverside coach John Wolf said. “I was proud of the girls as they maintained their composure through poor shooting early, though I give Ellwood credit. They played hard, but we just got more shots to fall the second half.”

Seniors Morgan Bailey and Katie Stand led the Lady Panthers with 17 and 16 points. Scoring was completed by sophomore Katie Wolf, eight points, and seniors Jordan Annarumo, six, and Ashley Boehm, three. Stang and Annarumo each made two 3-point shots and Boehm had one.

20151204_190435For the Lady Wolverines, scoring was more evenly distributed: senior Karrington Ketterer, nine points, freshman Natalie Greco, seven, senior Emily Brown, five, senior Allie McKelvey, four, freshman Isabella Roth, four, and senior Paige Maison, four.

“The third quarter we had a lot of mental mistakes which resulted in turnovers that they turned into points,” Ellwood coach Jolene Krupa said. “It was hard to overcome that.”

However, one game does not make a tournament. Fresh from victory, Riverside returned to Lincoln on Saturday to defeat Avonworth 47-31. Stang and Wolf led the offense with 12 and 10 points. Annarumo brought in two 3-pointers.

With the girls’ record last year and the tip-off tournament, Wolf has much reason for optimism.

20151204_185820“As a whole our team is improving and that needs to continue as we approach section play,” he said. “The team has been great to coach. With no real changes to the roster, I have enjoyed coaching this team more than last year.”

For its second game, Ellwood City had a rough night against Beaver Falls, losing 37-20. Ketterer and McKelvey led the scoring with eight and five points.

“We need to work on discipline and being patient,” Krupa said. “We have a tendency to want to look to score after the first one or two passes instead of waiting for a better shot opportunity.”
