Franitti, Sullivan Earn Top Finishes At WPIAL Track & Field Championships

Top place finishes by two local athletes spotlighted the individual achievements at the 2024 WPIAL Boys’ & Girls’ Track & Field Championships on Wednesday at the William C. Lennox Track on the campus of Slippery Rock University. Ellwood City sprinter Nick Franitti took home a 1st place WPIAL Championship in the WPIAL Class 2A Boys 300m Hurdles. Franitti posted a mark of 39.39 to take home gold. EC Boys, RHS Girls Each Collect 2nd Place Finishes At 2024 Beaver County Championships

The Ellwood City Boys and Riverside Girls Track and Field Teams each collected 2nd Place finishes At Beaver County Championships Saturday at Helling Stadium. The Wolverine boys finished with 83 team points on the afternoon while the Panther girls collected 84.5 points. For Ellwood City, the four man relay team of Nick Wise, Bradley Custer, Drew Steffler, and Colten Crizer posted a 1st place finish in the Boys 4×800 Meter Relay (8:28.62). Riverside’s Lexi Fluharty and Ellwood City’s Delaney Sturgeon each took home a 1st place finish in their respective event at the MAC Championships on Wednesday at Shenango High School. Fluharty, a junior, turned in a personal record time of 11:38.39 in the Girls 3200m Run to capture 1st place, shattering a 25-year-old school record in the process. Saturday marked the 50th Beaver County Track and Field Championships competition held at Riverside High School. Ellwood City and Riverside teams were well represented and turned in some podium-worthy performances and all four teams put together top ten finishes. The Ellwood City boys track and field team swept its season opening meet this week, earning victories over Riverside and Union. The girls track team split their meet, with a victory over Union, but were bested by rival Riverside. “It’s a great start to the season and having the win against the cross-town rivals who have long been known for success on the track simply adds to the celebration,” said head coach Nate Brown. Ellwood City is hungry for more. With mostly freshmen and sophomores helping to lead the way with an all new coaching staff, Ellwood City has an appetite for more this spring on the track. “We were a young team last year,” says second year coach, Nathan Brown. “Many of those kids saw successes they weren’t expecting and now they’re hungry for more.” The team was uprooted from its home track last year due to Helling Stadium rennovations, forcing practices to be held at neighboring Riverside’s track facility and all meets to be on the road.
