Bernstine Announces State Grant to Support Redevelopment of the Former INMETCO Facility

HARRISBURG – Rep. Aaron Bernstine (R-Butler/Lawrence) today announced a $1.5 million Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grant has been awarded to support the redevelopment of the former International Metals facility in Ellwood City. The funding will help American Metal Recycling (AMR) and Irongate Industrial LLC complete critical improvements needed to restore the facility to operation. Planned renovations include repairing and modernizing existing infrastructure, rebuilding the blast furnace, installing semi-robotic refining systems, upgrading equipment and improving site utilities to enhance safety, efficiency and long-term competitiveness. INMETCO Property Purchased With Plans On Operating

According to a local news report, Irongate Industrial Center LLC was the highest bidder in purchasing the land and building of the former International Metals Reclamation Company (INMETCO) with plans to operate the facility. The report adds that during a June 26 auction, Irongate Industrial Center LLC was the highest bidder at $1.4 million for the industrial site and under the terms of the sale, Irongate agreed to purchase the property free-and-clear of all liens, interests and encumbrances, and will not be responsible for any liability or obligations from INMETCO during the bankruptcy case. INMETCO Declares Bankruptcy

For the second time in less than a decade, INMETCO has filed bankruptcy. The Ellwood City recycling plant filed a Chapter 7 bankruptcy in the Western District of Pennsylvania bankruptcy court on January 31, 2024. According to published reports, eight employees were kept on at the plant after the initial round of layoffs in October and affected workers received no severance pay.
