The Lincoln High School softball team took advantage of terrific weekend weather and played two games. They lost to Keystone Oaks on Friday and bounced back with a win against Union on Saturday. The wind was blowing out at Mohawk High School Tuesday afternoon as the Ellwood City girls softball team blasted three home runs in its 22-10 slugfest victory over Mohawk. Maria Ioanilli hit two home runs, part of her three-hit performance, and knocked in six runs to lead the Wolverine offense that responded to its early deficit with 14 runs in the last four inning. Ellwood City started their season off in grand fashion as they invoked the mercy rule in both game over the weekend as the Wolverines easily dispatched New Brighton and Ambridge. On Friday, in their 13-1 victory, the Wolverines started out quickly as lead off batter Kali Barnett reached on an error on the right fielder and later scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Angie Nardone. The Lady Wolverines put together another solid team effort and defeated Wilmington on Tuesday evening in a battle for the #1 seed. Ellwood City came away with a hard fought 6-4 victory. The Lady Wolverines closed out section play strongly as they defeated Hopewell Thursday afternoon by a score of 9-0.  The team improves to 10-5 on the season and finished section play with a record of 7-3. Makinley Magill got things started in the top of the second as she laced a double into left-center field.  Magill scored as Kyla Servick’s perfectly placed bunt single was thrown into right field for a two-base error.  Ariana Garroway walked with two outs to put runners on first and third.  Garroway and Servick then executed a double steal to plate the second run.
