Ellwood City Softball Earns Big Comeback With Walkoff Victory

The Ellwood City softball team displayed a tremendous amount of character and grit with a great walk off win over Avonworth Wednesday afternoon at Stiefel Park. The team overcame two different deficits by scoring seven runs over the final two innings to earn the 7-6 victory. Hard hitting left fielder Mollie Street ended things in the bottom of the seventh with a one out two strike sacrifice fly to score Aliya Garroway from third base and the celebration began. In a rather successful afternoon for the local baseball and softball teams, Ellwood City baseball and softball teams both earned victories while the Riverside baseball team defeated Aliquippa handily. Wolverines Grab Lead In Fifth Inning For Victory Over Freedom Area Ellwood City bounced back from a four run deficit and stole the lead late, defeating Freedom 8-4 on the road Tuesday. The Lincoln High School softball team took advantage of terrific weekend weather and played two games. They lost to Keystone Oaks on Friday and bounced back with a win against Union on Saturday. The wind was blowing out at Mohawk High School Tuesday afternoon as the Ellwood City girls softball team blasted three home runs in its 22-10 slugfest victory over Mohawk. Maria Ioanilli hit two home runs, part of her three-hit performance, and knocked in six runs to lead the Wolverine offense that responded to its early deficit with 14 runs in the last four inning. Ellwood City baseball and softball programs took to the fields this month as a start to their respective spring seasons with each having new outlooks on the long anticipated season. Ellwood City started their season off in grand fashion as they invoked the mercy rule in both game over the weekend as the Wolverines easily dispatched New Brighton and Ambridge. The Lady Wolverines put together another solid team effort and defeated Wilmington on Tuesday evening in a battle for the #1 seed. Ellwood City came away with a hard fought 6-4 victory. After trailing for much of the game, a four-run rally by Ellwood City was later outdone by a 5-run final frame by Neshannock leading to a 10-7 road victory for the Lancers at Stiefel Park on Wednesday. The Wolverines rallied in the fifth inning and laid claim to a two-run cushion entering the seventh inning, but Neshannock plated two runs to tie the game and later in the inning saw Jesse Fehrs double home the go-ahead run.
