Press Release Ellwood City Area Historical Society Monthly Meeting and Scholarship Awards MARTHA GREENE WROTE HER MEMORIES OF THE LOVELY NEW ELLWOOD CITY At the April membership meeting, Louise Carroll  portrayed Martha Greene, wife of Merritt Greene. Merritt Greene came here in 1889 to serve as the general manager and purchasing agent of the “future resort town” being promoted by Henry W. Hartman, and the Pittsburg Company.  The next year his wife and son moved here to be with him.  They first rented the former Pettit home, then bought it and had it moved across the street.  It was located…

Ellwood City Area Historical Society Membership Meeting

The Ellwood City area Historical Society met for their monthly membership meeting on April 9. Thirty-five people attended and door prizes were won by four. Everett Bleakney welcomed everyone to the meeting and The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jim Houk. Everett asked for a moment of silence for three Society members who had passed away since the March meeting; Sam Mullin, Lois Richards and Carl Sammons. Everett advised the essays for the Robert and Janice Barensfeld scholarships must be in by April 12 and encouraged members to pass this on to any graduating students they may know. Ron Geddes…

Historical Society Welcomes Guest Speaker On April 9

Louise Carroll will be the guest speaker at the April 9th membership meeting of the Ellwood City Area Historical Society. She will portray Martha Greene, wife of Merritt Green, who came here in 1889, to help establish Ellwood, as a future resort town. Mrs. Greene was well impressed with the fledgling town of Ellwood and expressed her thoughts in her own writings. Louise was born and raised in Ellwood City, graduated from Lincoln High School and attended Geneva College and Providence School of Nursing. Ellwood Historical Society Monthly Meeting Recap

The Ellwood City Area Historical Society monthly membership meeting was held last Monday, March 12, 2018. Guy Prestia, a World War II Veteran led the Pledge to the American flag. Those in attendance were reminded of the annual Robert and Janice Barensfeld Scholarships.  Two (2) $1500.00 scholarships will be awarded at the May meeting.  Graduating students from Lincoln High and Riverside High Schools are eligible.  Applications may be obtained from the Guidance Counselors of the schools.  The scholarships have been awarded through the Historical Society since the year 1999. 2018 Historical Society Scholarship Awards Announced

The Ellwood City Area Historical Society will award the Robert and Janice Barensfeld Scholarships of $1,500.00 each to two (2) graduating seniors in 2018 who have been accepted into an institution of higher learning. (i.e. 4 year, Trade School or Performing Arts) Please note the following requirements. 2018 graduating students from Lincoln High School and Riverside High School are eligible. One (1) scholarship will be available to both Lincoln and Riverside High Schools, providing all requirements are met, with a approval of the Ellwood City Area Historical Society’s scholarship committee. February Ellwood City Historical Society Meeting Notes

The Ellwood City Area Historical Society meeting held its monthly meeting Monday evening at the History Center.  The meeting was opened as President Everett Bleakney welcoming everyone, and explaining the mission of the Historical Society which is to protect, promote and preserve the Ellwood City Area History and,  to make it accessible to the people of Ellwood City. The Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag was led by World War II Veteran Guy Prestia. Ellwood City Area Historical Society “We Can Do It” Recap

Everett Bleakney, Board President of the Ellwood City Area Historical Society sent in a recap of the successful “We Can Do It!” exhibit: “The WW II “We Can Do It!” Senator John Heinz History Center exhibit was a huge success. We were impressed with so many young students that had an interest in it. Thanks to both the Lincoln and  Riverside High Schools for taking advantage of the exhibit by holding  history classes here.
