Bats Blistered as Riverside Panthers Defeats Beaver Falls, 14-9 Both pitching staffs had their hands full on Tuesday in a high-scoring affair where the Riverside Lady Panthers bested Beaver Falls, 14-9. The Panthers (1-1 overall) opened up scoring with a six-run first inning and crept out to a 9-2 lead before the Tigers were able to respond. Beaver Falls scored four runs in the third inning. The Riverside varsity baseball team came out on the victors end of a shutout on Thursday while the Wolverines took a shutout defeat on Thursday. The Panthers defeated Mohawk Area 8-0 on Thursday as two pitchers combined to throw a shutout. Riverside notched four runs in the sixth inning. The Ellwood City baseball squad watched their Monday afternoon game slip away early and couldn’t recover in a 13-2 loss to Shenango. The Wolverines struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Shenango, giving up 13 runs. Your two-time defending WPIAL Champion Riverside Panthers are slotted as preseason #1 for Class-3A, Section 2 according to an WPIAL baseball social media account.  Following the Panthers in the section ranking is Ellwood City in third place. The defending WPIAL champion Ellwood City Wolverines softball team received an opening round scare Wednesday afternoon, but twice were able to erase multiple-run deficits to finally oust the pesky 8-seeded Burrell Bucs 6-5 in the WPIAL Class 3A softball quarterfinals Wednesday at North Allegheny. Burrell (8-8 overall) took a 2-0 lead in the fifth, backed by pitcher Brittany Dunn, who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but the Lady Wolverines used a walk and a couple errors in their half of the inning to knot the game at two.
