SPORTS ROUND-UP: Zach Hare Leads RHS Baseball, Tennis Defeats LHS

Zack Hare was dominant on the bump Thursday afternoon and at the plate Thursday in Riverside’s 4-1 victory over West Allegheny running the Panthers early season unbeaten record to 4-0. Hare rang up 11 strikeouts and surrendered only three hits, one walk, and one run over six and two-thirds innings. The righty also went 4-4 at the plate with an RBI. Ellwood City Falls Short In 73rd Little League Tournament; Zito Earns Homerun Derby Crown

After collecting an opening round win on Tuesday in the 73rd Annual Little League Tournament, Ellwood City squad could not advance any further, falling twice on Saturday, first to Laurel and again to Neshannock, each by a 5-2 count that eliminated the tournament host. Neshannock earned the tournament championship with two victories over Laurel on Sunday. Ellwood City’s Joey Zito won the the 23rd Ellwood City Little League Tournament Home Run Derby at Freidhoff Field. Zito launched eight home runs to defeat 29 other contestants from the tournament. Ellwood City Rallies To Defeat Shenango In Its Little League Tournament Opening Game

Ellwood City rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to defeat Shenango, 5-2, in the 73rd Ellwood City Little League Tournament on Tuesday night. Ben Sukits smacked the key hit of the game with a three-run triple which erased a 2-1 deficit. Joey Zito and Luca Smith combined for a no-hitter with 17 strikeouts to lead Ellwood City on the mound. EC Baseball Beats Laurel, Softball Blasts Beaver Falls

Both Ellwood City baseball and softball teams collected victories on Wednesday afternoon. The Wolverines baseball team defeated Laurel 10-8 at Sanders Field behind two doubles and a 4-RBI performance by catcher Jordan Keller. After Ellwood City posted three runs in the first inning, the Wolverines tacked on three more in the second inning as Keller doubled in a run and Aaron Lake smacked an RBI single. Lake finished with three singles and three RBIs on the afternoon. Lady Wolverines Rally Late, Knock Off Central Valley 6-4

Ellwood City used a late rally, on the road, Monday to earn a 6-4 victory against unbeaten section foe Central Valley. After training 4-0 entering the top of the six inning, the Wolverines struck for four runs and added two more in the seventh to pull away to victory. Ellie Kalantzis connected on a pivotal home run in the sixth inning rally and Kiley LeViere singled in the frame to knot the score. Riverside Defeats Shenango 7-1, Oliastro Collects 700th Career Victory

Riverside Panthers coach Dan Oliastro collected his 700th career coaching victory as the Panthers defeated Shenango 7-1 on the road Monday afternoon. Darren McDade finished with four RBIs to lead the Panthers offense and batterymate Christian Lucarelli collected the win on the mound. McDade smacked a bases clearing double in the third inning to break open the 1-0 contest and walked in the sixth inning to bring home yet another run for Riverside. Local Baseball History Highlighted At Historical Society Dinner

Dick Freidhoff passed away in 1985. The local steelworker never coached high school baseball, yet his influence on the game helped Riverside High School win the State Championship in 2023. Illustrious Riverside head baseball coach, Dan Oliastro credited Freidhoff with instilling in him a love for the game and a winning ethic when he played for him as a member of the Moose Club-sponsored little league team in the 1950s. “We practiced every day. Six Ellwood City Wolverine seniors were recognized in advance of the Wolverines final home game of its season Tuesday afternoon. Ellwood City was defeated by Shenango 14-1. Ellwood City sophomore Will Nardone pitched six scoreless innings Wednesday afternoon as the Wolverines easily dismantled the visiting Central Valley Warriors 10-0 at Sanders Field. Nardone allowed only three singles on the afternoon. He stuck out five batters while issuing only three walks.
