Wolverine Softball/Baseball Teams Both Advance In WPIAL Playoffs

The defending WPIAL champion Ellwood City Wolverines softball team received an opening round scare Wednesday afternoon, but twice were able to erase multiple-run deficits to finally oust the pesky 8-seeded Burrell Bucs 6-5 in the WPIAL Class 3A softball quarterfinals Wednesday at North Allegheny. Burrell (8-8 overall) took a 2-0 lead in the fifth, backed by pitcher Brittany Dunn, who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but the Lady Wolverines used a walk and a couple errors in their half of the inning to knot the game at two. WPIAL Playoffs Are Set: Defending Champs Rule Supreme

After the conclusion of stellar regular seasons for two local sporting clubs, the WPIAL announced its Championship Brackets with no surprises to those who follow the programs – Ellwood City Wolverines softball (15-0 overall) and Riverside Panthers baseball (15-1 overall) teams received top seeds and byes in their respective Class-3A Championship brackets. Skyla Greco didn’t allow a single hit as Wolverines defeated Steel Valley 5-0 on Tuesday. To get the final out Greco struck out Veronica Sikora pushing her game total to 14 strikeouts against three walks in the contest. Wolverines took an early lead in the second inning. Stiefel Park Batting Practice: Lady Wolverines Hit 2 Homers and Improve to 10-0

 Grove City entered Friday evening’s non section game with 11 home runs on the season. The Lady Wolverines won the home run battle and the game with a 9-5 victory. Skyla Greco didn’t allow a single run as Wolverines defeated Riverside 10-0 on Tuesday. Greco allowed just two hits and struck out Baily Dwyer to end the game. Wolverines grabbed an early lead. Four RBI Day for Magill Leads Wolverines Past Freedom Area

Wolverines defeated Freedom Area 16-1 on Tuesday thanks in part to Brooklyn Magill, who drove in four runners. Magill drove in runs on a single in the second, a single in the fourth, and a single in the fifth. Wolverines collected 16 hits. Brooklyn Magill, Eisabela Miller, Zoe Kalantzis, Anna Ferrucci, and Reagan Mittler each collected multiple hits for Wolverines. Miller and Magill. PHOTOS: Lady Wolverines Open Season with Convincing Win Over Union

The Lady Wolverines started the season off on the right foot with a 13-3 victory over the Union Scotties on Saturday. The game was halted after 5 innings due to the mercy rule. Anna Ferrucci led the 9 hit attack with 3 singles and 2 runs scored. Natalia Greco added two singles, 3 RBI’s and scored twice. Breonna Streit and Megan Siegfried contributed doubles. Ellwood Commends Softball Team

On Saturday during the festival, Ellwood City recognized the achievements of the Lincoln High School Varsity Softball team. Mayor Anthony J. Court presented the team and head coach Gary Rozanski with a commendation. The girls team claimed the section and WPIAL titles, advanced to the second round of playoffs, and remained undefeated until their last game. “The performance and accomplishment from the entire team and coaching staff have been superlative and are to be commended,” Court said. Riverside Advances to Semi-Finals; Ellwood Season Over

Riverside baseball and Ellwood softball played the same school at the same time at the same place: Moniteau High School on Thursday at Slippery Rock University. Unfortunately, the results weren’t the same. Riverside continued its scoreless streak, winning 1-0 over the District IX school. Pitcher Michael Boswell struck out eight, extending his record to 40 scoreless innings. Riverside advances to the semifinals, playing Bishop McCort on Monday.
