Abrupt Endings For PIAA Championship Quests: Riverside, Ellwood Both Shutout In Quarterfinals

The South Park Eagles stunned the consecutive WPIAL Championship Ellwood City Wolverines by pounding out eleven hits en route to a 11-0 mercy-rule victory in the PIAA 3-A Softball Playoffs at North Allegheny High School Thursday afternoon. Panthers, Lady Wolverines Both Advance in PIAA Opening Rounds

Skyla Greco didn’t allow a single run as Wolverines defeated Ligonier Valley 6-0 on Tuesday in its PIAA Opening Round contest. Greco struck out seven batters and allowed just four hits. The WPIAL champs broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth with three runs. Breonna Streit knocked in a run, and Megan Siegfried drove in a pair. Reagan Mittler rounded out the scoring by driving in Anna Ferrucci in the bottom of the sixth. Wolverines had nine hits in the game. Streit and Ferrucci each collected multiple hits for Wolverines. Back-to-back: Lady Wolverines Dominant in WPIAL Repeat

Elwood City’s softball team has been a dominant force over WPIAL opponents in recent years, as it carried a carried a 37-game winning streak against such foes into Wednesday’s Class 3A championship game. That dominance continued as the Wolverines scored a convincing 10-0 victory in five innings against Deer Lakes at California University’s Lilley Field. To get that win, the Wolverines (18-0) had to be extremely patient. Wolverine Softball/Baseball Teams Both Advance In WPIAL Playoffs

The defending WPIAL champion Ellwood City Wolverines softball team received an opening round scare Wednesday afternoon, but twice were able to erase multiple-run deficits to finally oust the pesky 8-seeded Burrell Bucs 6-5 in the WPIAL Class 3A softball quarterfinals Wednesday at North Allegheny. Burrell (8-8 overall) took a 2-0 lead in the fifth, backed by pitcher Brittany Dunn, who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but the Lady Wolverines used a walk and a couple errors in their half of the inning to knot the game at two. WPIAL Playoffs Are Set: Defending Champs Rule Supreme

After the conclusion of stellar regular seasons for two local sporting clubs, the WPIAL announced its Championship Brackets with no surprises to those who follow the programs – Ellwood City Wolverines softball (15-0 overall) and Riverside Panthers baseball (15-1 overall) teams received top seeds and byes in their respective Class-3A Championship brackets. Skyla Greco didn’t allow a single hit as Wolverines defeated Steel Valley 5-0 on Tuesday. To get the final out Greco struck out Veronica Sikora pushing her game total to 14 strikeouts against three walks in the contest. Wolverines took an early lead in the second inning.  Grove City entered Friday evening’s non section game with 11 home runs on the season. The Lady Wolverines won the home run battle and the game with a 9-5 victory. Four RBI Day for Magill Leads Wolverines Past Freedom Area

Wolverines defeated Freedom Area 16-1 on Tuesday thanks in part to Brooklyn Magill, who drove in four runners. Magill drove in runs on a single in the second, a single in the fourth, and a single in the fifth. Wolverines collected 16 hits. Brooklyn Magill, Eisabela Miller, Zoe Kalantzis, Anna Ferrucci, and Reagan Mittler each collected multiple hits for Wolverines. Miller and Magill.
