The Ellwood City softball team continued its undefeated streak following two victories against Neshannock and Shenango. Following a 13-3 conference victory on Tuesday, April 26 versus Neshannock, the Lady Wolverines faced weather cancellations until playing Shenango on Saturday. Ellwood defeated Shenango 6-3. Although the Lady Wolverines got off to a 2-0 head start in the first inning, Shenango pulled ahead 3-2 by the fourth. The Ellwood girls softball team mercy-ruled New Brighton on Tuesday and outlasted Laurel in an extended 11-inning game on Thursday, continuing their undefeated streak. On Tuesday’s home game, Ellwood’s offense had a decisive first inning, with 14 runs. The game continued until the fourth inning, when the Lady Wolverine’s won by mercy rule 14-2. Ariana Garroway had the most RBI’s with four, and Natalie Greco earned three runs. In batting, Greco, Garroway and Skyla Greco each had two hits. The Riverside baseball team played and won two games last week. On April 5, the Panthers defeated Vincentian Academy 4-3 and got a 2-0 win against Shenango on Thursday. For the Shenango win, juniors Ricky Wass and Dylan Speicher earned runs in the first and third innings. Michael Boswell pitched a near-perfect game with 13 strikeouts and only two hits against. The Panthers are now 5-1 overall and 1-0 in their conference. They play an away game at Laurel today, weather permitting. When the fourth inning started, the Ellwood City softball team was in a quagmire, down 5-2 where any gains could be shut down by more Laurel runs. However, the Lady Wolverines made a resounding comeback to win 8-6. Ellwood earned two runs in the fourth inning and from then on, kept Laurel at bay. The Lady Spartans only got one run in for the rest of the game while Ellwood picked up four more in the sixth and seventh inning. The Lady Wolverines started their season with 10-0 win over Freedom in a home non-conference game on Thursday. The Ellwood City softball team got their first run in the third inning when senior Allie McKelvey stole second and subsequently third and got batted in with a single by senior Mallory Swaggor. The Lady Wolverines overpowered Freedom in the fifth inning with seven runs, followed by two in the seventh inning. Juniors Camille Maine and Eisabella Miller each had three RBIs.
