Smiley, Wolverines Defeat Freedom 34-14, Improve Record to 3-1

Chris Smiley threw for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Ellwood City Wolverines to a 34-14 victory over Freedom Friday Night at Helling Stadium. The section victory improved the surging Wolverines record to 3-1 on the season – already eclipsing their win total from last year. PHOTOS: Wolverines Run Away From Carlynton Late, Earn 25-12 Victory

Ellwood City used a 17-yard fourth quarter touchdown run by running back Elijah Palmer-McCane to break at 12-12 tie and lead the Wolverines to its 25-12 victory over Carlynton Friday night at Helling Stadium. Palmer-McCane rushed for 150 yards and two touchdowns on the evening as the Wolverines collected over 200 yards on the ground rushing as a team. PHOTOS: Panthers Downed By South Side 35-7

Riverside opened up its regular season Friday night, but the Panthers fell at home to South Side by a score of 35-7. After a 12-yard touchdown run by Brady Newman tied the game in the second quarter, the visiting Beavers scored 28 unanswered points to secure the road victory. Robbie Janis led the Panthers with 96 yards rushing on 12 carries, while Ryan Theadore collected 49 yards passing in defeat. Zach Hare hauled in a team-high four receptions for 34 yards for Riverside. The Panthers (0-1 Overall) next travels to Shenango on Friday for a non-conference tilt.


PHOTOS – Panther Night 2023

Riverside School District held its annual Panther Night Thursday evening at Riverside Memorial Stadium. The program included the introduction of the Panthers fall sports programs and the Riverside marching band. The Panthers football team will have its first home game on Friday, September 1st versus South Side at Riverside Memorial Stadium.  The Panthers also host Ellwood City in the annual Riv-Ell game scheduled for Friday, October 27th. PHOTOS: Construction Progressing On PA Turnpike Beaver River Bridge Replacement Project

The Pennsylvania Turnpike continues to progress through stage 3 of construction for a multiphase project involving the total reconstruction and widening of two miles (Milepost 12 and Milepost 14) of the Turnpike’s east-west mainline nearest the Exit 13 Beaver Valley (Beaver Falls/Ellwood City) interchange. “Our contractor continues to establish access roads on the east and west sides of the Beaver River for new bridge construction,” says Crispin Havener, Media Communications Specialist. “Over the past few months, construction got underway to drill shaft foundations for the western piers for the new bridge structures as well as driving piling and constructing footings…

Franklin Township hosted its 10th Annual National Night Out event Tuesday amid cooler summer temperatures at the Franklin Plaza in Ellwood City. The event was sponsored by Plassmeyer Towing. The free event, open to the public, featured activities for children, fire safety, CPR training, prize giveaways, and food vendors. Carpenter’s Project Completes 52 Projects On 35 Homes

The Carpenter’s Project completed its 22 year of service last week with a long list of improvements to homes around the area. Reagan Boariu won the 2023 Little Miss Firecracker title this past weekend at the Ellwood City Festival. The 8-year-old garnered the crown during the 6th Annual Little Miss Firecracker pageant held on Friday, June 30th at the Folino Stage in Ewing Park.  The pageant is part of the annual Ellwood City Arts, Crafts, Food & Entertainment Festival. Reagan is the daughter of Eric and April Boariu. She dazzled the judges with her patriotic tutu ensemble and bubbly personality. She did a winning curtesy at the judges on stage. Thousands of visitors flocked to the grounds to enjoy local food, crafts, and plenty of entertainment during the 2023 Ellwood City Arts, Crafts & Foods Festival. While warm and clear weather greeted patrons on Friday, heavy rain on Saturday and Sunday made for a soggy end to the annual festival.  Amid the rain on Sunday, the scheduled fireworks took place as scheduled. The 3rd Annual Dog Days of Summer, which is sponsored by Reeds Services, and benefits police K9s took place on Saturday and Sunday in Ewing Park. Forces having K9s is a dying program because of the lack of funding available according to Chad Reed of Reed’s Services. Reed has said that as pet lovers and advocates of community safety, he is dedicated to continuing this program into the future.
