Photos: Memorial Day Parade

The Ellwood City Memorial Day Parade was held yesterday, honoring the men and women that died in military service for the United States of America. The parade started at 10 a.m. on the Veterans Memorial Bridge and concluded on Spring Avenue. For the first time this year, there was a picnic at Circle Playground following the parade.

Lady Wolverines Use Quick Start to Oust Rival Panthers

The Lady Wolverines used a three-hit performance by Freshman Ariana Garroway and an early five-run outburst to quickly dispatch the Panthers 15-0 in four innings on Tuesday. Ellwood City mashed three homes runs and used a five-run first inning and four-run second inning to quickly separate themselves from the visiting Panthers. “The team hit from top to bottom in the lineup,” head coach Gary Rozanski said. “We were able to jump on Riverside early and we put the ball in play hard from the beginning.” The victory on Senior Night continued the Wolverines undefeated season (12-0 overall) that will be…

Ellwood City observed National Day of Prayer with a gathering in the Community Plaza on Lawrence Avenue at noon yesterday. “Wake Up America” was the theme. It was the 65th annual National Day of Prayer. Rev. Norina Owens of Women of Faith International Inc. gave the welcome. State Representative Jaret Gibbons, D-10, gave the greeting and pledge. Janelle Fox, a student at Lincoln High School, sung the national anthem. 10 local pastors prayed for topics including business, churches, education and more. The Ellwood City Amateur Baseball Federation celebrated opening day of the summer baseball season on Saturday with a parade and festivities in Ewing Park. Events included a home run derby, dunk tank, carnival games, inflatables, prizes and trophies, a 50/50 raffles, a Chinese auction, and more. There was also a Pitch, Hit & Run event for boys and girls ages 7 to 14 beginning at 4 p..m. in Sanders Field.

We’ve gotten our first reader submissions to our call for photos and videos of the Wayne Township bald eagles, which includes one of the eagles in flight. It doesn’t appear that the eaglets are big enough to stick above the nest yet. Remember, to find the nest, drive to Rodger’s Park in Ellport, colloquially referred to as “The Hole,” and walk down the nature trail toward the Connoquenessing and several islands. Earth Day Attracts Hundreds to Ewing Park to Celebrate the Planet

An estimated 700 visitors passed through Ewing Park to visit the annual Lawrence County Earth Day Celebration. Although the weather was chilly, it didn’t discourage attendance, and the sun shined throughout the festivities. “This Year’s Earth Day Celebration brought Ellwood City, New Castle and the surrounding areas together to laugh, learn, create and celebrate our beautiful planet,” Tracey Ferguson, Lawrence County Earth Day co-organizer, said.
