Videos: Local Eagle in Flight

We’ve gotten our first reader submissions to our call for photos and videos of the Wayne Township bald eagles, which includes one of the eagles in flight. It doesn’t appear that the eaglets are big enough to stick above the nest yet. Remember, to find the nest, drive to Rodger’s Park in Ellport, colloquially referred to as “The Hole,” and walk down the nature trail toward the Connoquenessing and several islands. Earth Day Attracts Hundreds to Ewing Park to Celebrate the Planet

An estimated 700 visitors passed through Ewing Park to visit the annual Lawrence County Earth Day Celebration. Although the weather was chilly, it didn’t discourage attendance, and the sun shined throughout the festivities. “This Year’s Earth Day Celebration brought Ellwood City, New Castle and the surrounding areas together to laugh, learn, create and celebrate our beautiful planet,” Tracey Ferguson, Lawrence County Earth Day co-organizer, said. Ellwood City Softball Team Masters Three Conference Games

The Ellwood City softball team swung past three conference opponents in three days. The Lady Wolverines shut down Riverside 15-0 on Thursday, defeated Neshannock 11-8 on Friday and finished the weekend with a victory against Mohawk 7-1 on Saturday. On Thursday’s away game against rival Riverside, Ellwood’s Skyla Greco pitched a near perfect game, striking out 12 batters as her team defeated Riverside 15-0. The Lady Wolverines consistently scored each inning. The mercy rule went into affect after five innings. Greco didn’t just keep the Lady Panthers pinned on defense, but spearheaded Ellwood’s offense with five RBIs and three hits….

Photos: 23rd Annual Community Easter Egg Hunt

Nearly 600 children collected 6,000 eggs Saturday morning at the 23rd Annual Community Easter Egg hunt. The event, for children nine and under, took place at the Ewing Park tennis courts. Children hunted the eggs scattered throughout the courts, collecting candy and prizes. In addition to eggs filled with candy, hundreds of eggs had slips of paper redeemable for prizes, and 25 special eggs provided a super prize of a large Easter Basket with a stuffed animal and candy.

“Casualties of Steel,” a Documentary on the Closing of Ellwood’s U.S. Steel

In 1974, U.S. Steel closed its seamless tube mill in Ellwood City. “Casualties of Steel,” a documentary, chronicles the cultural impact of that closing through first hand accounts of the people who lived during the booming times of steel and its sad aftermath. This film was created by Ben Minett as a requirement for an ethnography class at Carnegie Mellon University. The documentary has no narrator and instead progresses through the voices of Ellwood City residents. Minett is a 1997 Riverside High School graduate. He created “Casualties of Steel” during his master’s degree studies at Carnegie Mellon University. Minett lives…

Photos: St. Agatha is No More

Wednesday morning, a few walls of St. Agatha were standing but by 11 a.m., only rubble remained as the final upright structures were demolished. The gallery below shows the staircase still intact. Construction has begun on a pit, presumably for the foundation of CVS. According to the design plans, much of the land where St. Agatha was will be used for a parking lot while the pharmacy building itself will be where the apartment buildings were. Photos: 17th Annual Mr. Lincoln Pageant

The 17th Annual Mr. Lincoln Pageant was held on Sunday, Feb. 28 in the Lincoln High School auditorium. This year’s participants were: Brian Hudson, Nicholas Fleeson, Devin Cortez, Dominic Nocera, Hunter Bailey, Scott Miller, Norman Ballard, Vincent Romanio, Shawn Brown and Corey Hobbs. Dominic Nocera was named Mr. Lincoln 2016. Norman Ballard was the talent winner, and Corey Hobbs had the highest ticket sales. All proceeds from Mr. Lincoln benefit the March of Dimes.

Photos: CVS Deconstruction Crews

Deconstruction crews are now working on taking apart the church brick by brick, apparently beginning with the archway facing Fifth Street, which has now been all but removed. Shingles have also been removed facing Spring Avenue. There are minor traffic stops on Spring Ave west of Fifth Street, so taking an alternative route may be preferable.
