Photos: Riverside Girls and Boys Win Senior Nights, Advance to Playoffs

Senior Katie Stang took advantage of the senior spirit and scored 39 points, breaking her high score record last year by seven. Stang has scored 895 points during her junior and senior years. The Lady Panthers dominated New Brighton 65-22 in the Senior Night conference game held on Thursday, Feb. 4. Seniors Jordan Annarumo, Morgan Bailey, Ashely Boehm, Abbey Matiko, Katie Stang and Suzuno Kimara were honored prior to the game. The Ellwood City basketball team and cheerleading squad celebrated senior night before Friday’s conference game against New Castle. New Castle defeated Ellwood 79-23. New Castle remains undefeated this season and are ranked number 4 in the PIAA Class AAA by the Patriot News in Harrisburg. Ellwood City managed to score 14 points in the third quarter. Anthony Roth was the high scorer with 14 points. However, Ellwood City was able to end the season with a victory when they defeated Slippery Rock 40-30 on Saturday. Senior Karrington Ketterer scored 26 points in yesterday’s 49-34 win against New Castle on Senior Night. The Lady Wolverines have five seniors on the roster and all hold a special place to head coach Jolene Krupa and her sister, assistant coach Dena Noble. When the two started coaching, the Class of 2016 was in eighth grade, and Krupa and Noble have coached them up through the years. The Ellwood City wrestling team held its Senior Night on Feb. 3 and recognized two seniors, Christian Kerr and Carter MacMurdo. Although the wrestling team fell in the match to Armstrong 52-15, three Ellwood City athletes defeated opponents: Tyler Alberts, Donavan Chambers and Christian Kerr. The Lady Wolverines and Lady Panthers clashed at Lincoln High School in a non-conference rivalry game on Tuesday for the LGKG Holiday Classic. Riverside won 53-42. The two teams had started their seasons in a similar manner at the Ellwood City Tip-Off Tournament. As before, Riverside emerged victorious, although the rematch proved to be a closer competition. In the original game, Ellwood fell behind in the second half, losing 50-32. Since then, Riverside has gone on to be nigh undefeated, falling only to Neshannock. Riverside and Ellwood City clashed in a high-scoring game last night at Riverside High School. Both teams were locked in an evenly-matched struggle which remained undecided until the last two seconds with a steal and two point shot by Riverside. The game ended 71-69 with the Wolverines returning home in dismay. The second quarter ended 35-34, with Riverside leading. The second half of the game saw Ellwood take the lead only to gradually lose it. Ellwood scored 18 to Riverside’s 12 in the third quarter. However, the Panthers counterattacked in the fourth quarter. The weekend of Christmas festivities is past but the memories remain, as does the Ellwoodcity.org photo gallery. Friday, downtown Ellwood was sufficiently hectic to cause minor traffic jams as the community gathered for “Light Up Night” and the basketball tip off tournament. Saturday, Ellwoodians once again flocked to Lawrence Avenue for the Christmas Parade. With Scott and Caroline Golmic at the helm, the parade was a success. The weather also obliged with clear skies and warm temperatures all weekend.

During Friday Night’s ‘Light Up Night’ festivities in downtown Lawrence Avenue, the 30-foot Christmas tree was illuminated and followed with a fireworks spectacular. The celebration took place in the community plaza on Lawrence Avenue and followed up with Zambelli Fireworks. Entertainment in the plaza was presented by Rudy Zetz, Janet Falotico and Sharon Grey. This weekend, the students of Lincoln High School will present the musical “Into the Woods.” It’s an unusual and challenging production for several reasons. First, the students selected it. Director Laura Adams said the directorial staff, comprised of high school faculty, almost always chooses the musical. However, this year the students were especially excited about “Into the Woods” and convinced Adams to give it a try. The students had to perform in a workshop to demonstrate they could pull off some of the difficult numbers required. The students were inspired to do the musical after seeing the 2014 Disney film…
