Lincoln High School’s Class of 2020 enjoyed somewhat of a non-traditional graduation ceremony and ensuing recognition on Tuesday. Thanks to the county moving to the green phase graduating seniors gathered in the Leslie Sabo auditorium for a traditional ‘tassel turn’ but shortly thereafter all seniors participated in a parade that roamed throughout Ellwood City and its nearby neighborhoods. “[This] was definitely the most personable commencement ceremony we’ve ever had,” Principal Kirk Lape said this week, citing the attention that was paid to each individual graduate.  Lape has said the events will be filmed and edited into the commencement ceremony film.

Decked out in signs, balloons, and creative decorations, Ellwood City Area School District staff made a trek through numerous neighborhoods Thursday evening as part of a planned parade to show their love and dedication for their students. Over 120 staff, faculty, and administrators participated. The parade route included neighborhoods in Ellwood City, Portersville, Ellport, and Wampum. ECASD Police assisted in the parade working with the local police, public safety officials, and the fire department. The annual Light Up Night on Lawrence Avenue Friday Night featuring craft & food vendors, music, children’s activities, train rides, a human snow globe photobooth and strolling Holiday Characters featuring Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph. The was also Santa Claus photo opportunity at Venezie Sporting Goods & Apparel. The lighting of the 30-foot Christmas tree in the Community Plaza took place at 6:30 p.m with fireworks shortly after.  Although scheduled for 8:45 p.m., the firework explosion took place earlier than scheduled to the delight of the thousands of community members in attendance. PHOTOS: Annual Ellwood City Halloween Parade

In what may feel like annual conditions, wet weather and rain met those who paraded Lawrence Avenue on Saturday as part of the annual Ellwood City Halloween Parade. Many onlookers grabbed an umbrella and jacket to enjoy costumes, candy, and floats. The parade began at Holy Redeemer and continued west on Lawrence Avenue to 8th Street before returning on Crescent Avenue. Many area Trick or Treats are scheduled for Thursday evening. The Borough of Ellwood City will hold trick or treating from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.


PHOTOS: Panthers Air Attack Helps Defeat Valley On Senior Night

The Riverside Panthers used another air attack to defeat Valley Friday night, 24-14 on senior night. Ben Hughes threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns to lead Riverside (6-2) to the nonconference win against Valley (1-8). Nathan Sciarro caught eight passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns and added a 27-yard field goal. The victories places the Panthers in a win-and-get-in playoff scenario next week against New Brighton.  The winner of the Week 9 contest between the Panthers and Lions will clinch a WPIAL playoff berth with several other playoff implications on the line next week. The Ellwood City Girls Volleyball team capped senior night in victorious fashion, defeating the visiting Laurel Spartans Tuesday evening. Five Wolverine volleyball seniors were recognized before the match. After dropping the first set, Ellwood City rebounded with three consecutive set victories to take the match (19-25, 25-23, 25-26, 25-22) For the seniors, they experienced many wins and some losses on the playing court. They’ve left their blood, sweat, tears, and emotions on the court and they’ve learned how to compete with each other but still root for each other. The senior tossed a career-high six touchdown passes to lead the Panthers to a 49-28 victory over Ellwood City Friday night as part of Riverside homecoming festivities. The Wolverines were wiped out 19-0 by visiting Western Beaver on Friday night as part of the Ellwood City homecoming festivities. Saylee Grinnen was crowned 2019 Homecoming Queen at halftime.
