Panthers, Lady Wolverines Both Advance in PIAA Opening Rounds

Skyla Greco didn’t allow a single run as Wolverines defeated Ligonier Valley 6-0 on Tuesday in its PIAA Opening Round contest. Greco struck out seven batters and allowed just four hits. The WPIAL champs broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth with three runs. Breonna Streit knocked in a run, and Megan Siegfried drove in a pair. Reagan Mittler rounded out the scoring by driving in Anna Ferrucci in the bottom of the sixth. Wolverines had nine hits in the game. Streit and Ferrucci each collected multiple hits for Wolverines. EC Adult Basketball: Season 3 In The Books

Season 3 of the Ellwood City Basketball League is officially in the books. What a wild scene it was at the Family Center throughout the playoffs, and wild has never looked so good! To get the playoffs started, the first ever League MVP was announced.  With each Team Captain putting forth two votes; neither vote being one of their own team members,  it was Chris “King of the Castle” Smiley who emerged as the MVP, narrowly edging out Anthony “The Most Docious” Ovial.  Smiley was the backbone of Turncoats throughout the season, helping them to a league best 16-2 regular season…

Back-to-back: Lady Wolverines Dominant in WPIAL Repeat

Elwood City’s softball team has been a dominant force over WPIAL opponents in recent years, as it carried a carried a 37-game winning streak against such foes into Wednesday’s Class 3A championship game. That dominance continued as the Wolverines scored a convincing 10-0 victory in five innings against Deer Lakes at California University’s Lilley Field. To get that win, the Wolverines (18-0) had to be extremely patient. Back-to-back: Riverside defends WPIAL throne, collects 3A Championship

Last year, it took nine innings and only one run to give the Riverside Panthers the Class AA crown with a 1-0 win over Neshannock. In 2017, it was a new class and opponent but the end result was still the same as the Panthers cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Mount Pleasant Vikings at Wild Things Park to take the 3A baseball trophy back to North Sewickley Township. Panthers Overcome Early Deficit, Advance To A Consecutive WPIAL Championship Game

For the first time since 2015, the Riverside Panthers allowed a run in the WPIAL playoffs and had to claw its way back to clinch a spot in the 3A Championship game against a Brownsville Falcons squad that gave them all they can handle in a 5-4 victory. Lady Wolverines Advance To WPIAL Championship

The Wolverines remain undefeated on the season and now have run their winning streak to 38 against WPIAL teams. Ellwood City will make a second straight trip to the title game and also has qualified for the state playoffs after its 3-1 victory over #4 Southmoreland (11-7 overall) Tuesday afternoon. Ellwood City took a 1-0 lead in the first when Ariana Garroway scored on a Olivia Porter error. WPIAL Baseball: Wolverines Upset Steel Valley, Panthers Pitch Another Shutout

Ellwood City Wolverines upset the number two seed, the Steel Valley Ironmen 7-2 in WPIAL quarterfinal baseball 3A action Monday afternoon at Burkett Complex in Robinson Township. The Wolverines would score 4 runs in the first inning as Steel Valley Starter Tanner Cannon struggled. He walked two and hit a batter and gave up 4 straight singles. WPIAL Track Championship Qualifiers

Several local athletes qualified for states during the Track WPIAL Championships yesterday held at Baldwin High School. Riverside Qualifiers: Lance Fisher is the best in the WPIAL Class 2A in both discus and shot put. Calvin Wetzel took first in Boys 300 Meter Hurdles AA.
