Riverside Varsity Claws Back, But Falls Just Short Against Brownsville

Riverside Panthers Varsity’s effort to come back from down four runs in the first inning came up just short, as they fell 6-5 to Brownsville on Tuesday. Riverside scored five runs in the failed comeback on a error in the first, a error in the first, and a single by Drew Speicher in the fifth. Riverside Varsity Will Advance to Next Round of WPIAL Playoffs

With a hard fought 3 to 1 victory, Riverside Baseball Team will advanced to the next round of the WPIAL Playoffs. Both teams were strong on the pitcher’s mound Monday, but Riverside Panthers Varsity defeated Steel Valley 3-1. Riverside  pitchers allowed just three hits to Steel Valley. Riverside got things started in the second inning. Ethan Ziegler’s sac fly scored one run for Riverside Riverside Panthers Varsity. Gunnar Boehm was the winning pitcher for Riverside. Lady Wolverines Advance With Victory Over South Allegheny

The Ellwood City girls softball team advanced in the Class 3-A WPIAL Playoffs with a 4-1 first round victory over South Allegheny on Tuesday afternoon. Madi Krugh was the winning pitcher for the Wolverines. She went seven innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out two. Ellwood City Junior High Softball Team Completes Season Undefeated

The Lady Wolverines traveled to Monaca on Friday afternoon to square off in a doubleheader with a very talented Central Valley Warrior team. Wolverines defeated Shenango 10-5 on Thursday after taking the lead late in the game. The game was tied at four with Wolverines batting in the bottom of the fifth when Maria Ioanilli grounded out, scoring one run. Visitors Ask Ellwood School Board to Reconsider Removing Baseball Field Lights

Visitors representing Ellwood City area baseball organizations urged council to reconsider its decision to remove the lights from Sanders Field, arguing that the district’s baseball program will decline without the ability to play night games. The wooden light poles were installed in the early 1950’s and became a hallmark of the Ellwood area’s baseball program. At its January meeting, the board voted 6-3 to remove the wooden light poles following an accident in August when a pole collapsed, injuring a 13-year old girl and a man. EC Jr High Softball Remains Unbeaten After 10th Straight Win The Lady Wolverines traveled to Ambridge on Wednesday afternoon and made quick work of the Bridgers. The mercy rule stopped the game after 3 innings and the team returned home with a 15-0 victory.   The bats were on fire as nine different players banged out 15 hits. Sean Busby Shuts Out Mohawk Area, Wolverines Take The Win. Sean Busby didn’t allow a single run as Ellwood City Wolverines defeated Mohawk Area 3-0 on Tuesday. Busby allowed just one hit. The pitching was strong on both sides. Busby struck out nine, while Cummings sat down zero. Wolverines fired up the offense in the first inning, when Sammy DiCaprio singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run. One bright spot for Mohawk was a single by Toscano in the fifth inning. The good news for Blackhawk was that they scored the first run of the game. The bad news was The Lady Wolverines scoring the next 18 runs to win in a 3 inning mercy rule shortened game Monday evening at Stiefel Park. Mollie Street led the offense with a triple and single. PHOTOS: Ellwood Softball Senior Night Cut Short By Rain

Thursday evening’s Ellwood City softball contest was called due to rain in the top of the second inning with the Wolverines leading 1-0 over Beaver Falls.  Senior Breonna Streit led off with a base hit and scored on an RBI single by Maria Ioanilli to give the Wolverines the early lead. Madi Krugh struck out two Tigers in her 1 1/3 innings before the rain forced the delay and cancellation. The Lady Wolverines (5-4 overall) are next scheduled for road contest next week, first at Hopewell on Wednesday, May 9th, and later traveling to New Castle on Thursday, May 10th. …
