Riv-Ell Series Kicks Off The Baseball Season For Riverside & Ellwood City

What better way to roll out the spring baseball season, than to have two rivals host a home-and-home series? The crosstown rivals, Ellwood City and Riverside, each will quickly get acquainted with one another beginning Monday, March 27th when the Wolverines will host the Panthers in Ewing Park to begin regular season section play. The teams will flip home fields as part of the mini, two-game tilt with Riverside holding home field on Tuesday, March 28th. Both Ellwood City and Riverside softball teams will enter their 2023 regular season campaigns with sights set on returning to the WPIAL Playoffs, continuing streaks for both teams. For the Lady Wolverines, a playoff streak currently rests at eight straight seasons, and the girls will look to it nine this spring. Ellwood City Boys Tennis Defeated By Blackhawk

The Wolverines boys tennis team dropped its first match of the season, falling to Blackhawk 4-1 in Ewing Park Monday afternoon. Grady Smith picked up the lone victory for Ellwood City. Smith defeated Aiden Terry 6-2 and 7-5 in singles play. The Cougars used victories by Ben Crefeld (6-1, 6-2 over Ryan Odom) and Luke Shope (6-0, 6-0 over Anthony DiBuono) in singles play and swept doubles. Ellwood City Bocce Team Advances To PIAA/SOPA State Championships

The Ellwood City Bocce Team has advanced to the PIAA/SOPA State Championships! The team collected three victories and a first place finish at the regional championships held last week at Geneva College. There were 10 schools from the different sections represented. The top two teams advanced, and the Wolverines were one of them. Ellwood City defeated Bethel Park, 7-2, and Pine Richland, 5-3, before wrapping up their impressive performance with a 12-2 victory over Chartiers Valley in their final match. Four Riverside Swimmers Set To Compete At PIAA State Swimming Championships

Senior Sam Kline leads a host of four Riverside swimmers who have qualified and will participate in the PIAA Class 2A State Swimming Championships this week at the Kinney Natatorium at Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA The Riverside swim team also sends two relay teams to the Class 2A championships scheduled to take place March 15th and 16th. Kline used a 49.40 time in the WPIAL Championships, good for 8th place, to earn his spot in the 100m Freestyle at the PIAA Championships meet. Two Ellwood City wrestlers have qualified for upcoming wrestling tournaments this weekend. McClure Captures District 7 AA Sectional Championship

Wolverine freshman wrestler Gavin McClure earned a 1st place finish in his 133-pound weight class at the 2023 WPIAL AA Eastern Sectionals held at Greensburg Salem High School this past Saturday. With the performance McClure qualifies for the WPIAL Class-2A Wrestling Individual Championships to be held on February 24-25 at Chartiers Valley High School. The Ellwood City Boys Basketball was downed by the Deer Lakes Lancers 76-57 Monday evening in the opening round of the WPIAL Class-3A Playoffs.
