Natural Gas Odor Forces Brief Evacuation At Lincoln High School

An odor of natural gas detected in a Lincoln High School storage room Thursday morning, forcing a brief evacuation of the high school. This according to the Ellwood City Area School District and superintendent Wes Shipley. “We evacuated the building to Hartman while Columbia Gas and the local fire department investigated,” said Shipley in an emailed statement Friday. Both Columbia Gas and the fire department noted that the levels of gas in the air were minute and were not at an explosive level. Upcoming Trunk or Treat Events

Several area churches will be holding Trunk or Treat events as the Halloween holiday approaches. On Sunday, October 22, 2023, North Sewickley Presbyterian Church will hold its fifth annual Trunk or Treat from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in its church parking lot. The church is located at 106 Chapel Drive, Ellwood City, PA 16117, just look for all the decorated cars, costumes and children across from Shakespeare’s Restaurant. Residents Continue Opposition Against Planned Softball Stadium at Former Ewing Park School Location

Residents of Beatty and Wood Streets, where a softball stadium is planned for the Ellwood City Area School District girls softball team, continued to fill the seats of the Ellwood City Area School District’s Board of Directors meeting room, and they circulated a petition in the hallway of Lincoln High School in an effort stop the plan before Thursday’s voting meeting. One resident mentioned that any community member in any neighborhood in Ellwood City is also welcome to sign the petition and can stop into R.W. Mayor Anthony J. Court presented a proclamation this week to Tony “Hoots” Mazzei for his recent Heritage Marker from Beaver County Historical Research and Landmark Foundation. Sewer Upgrade Project on Wampum Avenue Underway

The Borough of Ellwood City has announced the start of the Wampum Avenue Pump Station Project in its effort to improve the infrastructure in the area. A letter was mailed to residents in the affected areas. Construction will take place on Wampum Avenue between Madison Street Ext and Fifth Street Bridge. This project is a sewer upgrade for multiple existing sewer transport lines in the wooded area East of Wampum Ave. A pump station will also be built to collect from these lines to be transported to the Ellwood City Borough Wastewater Treatment Plant for treatment. Bernstine Announces C2P2 Grant To Fund Rehabilitation of Wampum Park

HARRISBURG – Rep. Aaron Bernstine (R-Butler/Lawrence) announced grants totaling $171,300 have been awarded to Butler and Lawrence counties to fund two recreational improvement projects through the Community Conservation Partnerships Program (C2P2). “Parks and recreation centers provide gathering places for families and social groups, as well as for individuals of all ages and economic status,” said Bernstine. “Development projects are vital to our district as they provide job opportunities to those in surrounding areas and, upon completion, help increase tourism in our communities.” Wampum Borough in Lawrence County will receive a grant of $73,000 to rehabilitate Wampum Park.
