Lawrence County’s Earth Day Celebration

Lawrence County’s Earth Day Celebration will feature more than 40 educational exhibits, plenty of exciting activities, great entertainment, horse-drawn trolley rides, and a Wild World of Animals show. The event is FREE and will be held on Saturday, April 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Ewing Park. Earth Day is planned and hosted by Ellwood City Community Enrichment and the Lawrence County Earth Day Committee. Activities taking place at the Ellwood City Area Public Library include the following: Tuesday, March 28, at 10:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. — Family Laptime, an interactive program for babies as young as 6 months of age to toddlers and preschoolers. 12th Annual International Showcase Enjoyed at Riverside High School

On Tuesday, March 21, over 100 tenth grade World Cultures students with the support of 10 International Club students presented the Twelfth Annual International Showcase of Countries at Riverside High School. Following months of preparation, displays that showcased 33 nations of the world were opened to students in the Riverside district from grade K through 8. 30 Riverside classes with nearly 700 students toured the Showcase this year. Man Flees Police on Foot Through Traffic

Thomas James Myers, 39, of New Castle, will be facing a felony charge of delivery or possession with intent to deliver drug and two misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and prohibited acts, and Troy Lee Gompf, 51, of Ellwood City, will be facing two felony charges of hindering apprehension or prosecution, proceeding an incident that happened on February 24. According to the criminal complaint, an Ellwood City officer was patrolling the area of Line Avenue and Smiley Street when he noticed a van make a quick right turn into a side alley using a late turn signal. March Regular Meeting Brief

All items discussed at the March agenda meeting were passed at the regular meeting Monday night. Two Part-Time Policemen Hired by Borough

During yesterdays council meeting, council voted to pass an exception: at the Regular Meeting of Council held 9/19/16, Council voted to discontinue the shooting range at Stiefel Park, effective 12/31/16, to be in compliance with the Master Park Plan. However, a motion would be in order to make a one-time exception to use the shooting range in Stiefel Park to qualify one of the newly hired part-time officers (Gary Greene, Jr.). PHOTO: Two Boxers Receive Commendation from Ellwood City Borough

Charlie Clouston, a three-time golden glove champion, and Rosie Morales attended yesterdays council meeting to receive their commendations. Both of the commendations were presented by Council President, Connie MacDonald, who stated the men were being recognized by the Borough for competing in a Pittsburgh boxing invitational in Cuba where they demonstrated outstanding physical skills, great sportsmanship as well as served as an excellent international ambassador for the United States and the Borough of Ellwood City.

Woman Facing Charges of Child Endangerment After Injuring Infant

A resident of Freed’s Trailer Park in New Galilee, 24 year-old Courtney Marie Jeffries, will be facing charges of simple assault and endangering the welfare of children, proceeding an incident that occurred last month involving her three month old daughter. According to the criminal complaint, the daughter of Jeffries was taken to the Ellwood City Hospital with an injury to the child’s right arm. The infant was transferred to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh UPMC and a medical personnel at the facility examined the child and diagnosed her with a fracture on her upper arm. Western Pennsylvanians will be experiencing a temperature increase following the coincidental correlation of the first day of spring and the predicted spring weather-appropriate forecast. With today marking the official start of spring and after enduring some of the coldest temperatures of 2017 in Ellwood City over the past few weeks, the 10 day forecast is promising warmer, but wetter, weather.
