Hockey Ticket Raffle Winner Announced

Mary Maceyko is the winner of the Ellwood City United Fund Hockey Ticket Raffle. The winning number was Pennsylvania Lottery Pick Two # 92, drawn the evening of December 18, 2018. The winner received 4 Pen Hockey tickets($500 value) for the February 27 game, plus $200 spending cash. Chip Campbell, chairman of the Hockey Ticket Raffle event said, “the raffle was a success, all 100 tickets were sold and the money received from the raffle will be added to the 2017-2018 campaign fund.” The money raised during the Ellwood City United Fund campaign will go to fund the service agencies…

Moisture Issue at North Side Primary

While the Ellwood City School District works to flush excess lead from some of the taps at each of the schools, they are also working to fix a moisture problem at North Side Primary. The official press release from the district states this fall the district became aware of a moisture issue at North Side. In response, the District hired a company to test moisture and air quality on three separate occasions in three rooms in the basement of the building. The first and second floors were not affected. Lead Analytical Results Show Exceedance at Ellwood City Schools

According to the official results of the first round of the Ellwood City Area School District Lead Sampling and Analytical Results in Water, each of the schools has at least one fountain containing an excess of lead in the water. At Perry Elementary, eight out of the 21 total tested water sources showed an exceedance of USEPA Action Level (0.015 mg/L). Northside Elementary had two water sources that tested over the standard amount, and Hartman had one. December 2017 Regular Meeting Recap: 2018 Budget Approved

Yesterday was the December regular meeting for Ellwood City Borough Council, and also the last meeting for Council President Connie MacDonald, Vice President David DeCaria, and Councilman Brad Ovial. The newly elected council members will be taking their places starting next month. Visitors Paul Dici praised the work of the street department for their quick and thorough work during the snow storm last week. Bizarre Post Appears on Local Craigslist Pet Classifieds

A post, which has been shared in several local pet advocacy groups in the local area has many pet-parents concerned. The post, which was published on the Akron-Canton Ohio area pets community by an anonymous poster, is below along with more information. Craigslist is a web platform where users can anonymously post in the forums and classifieds to keep their identities safe while connecting with the community; unfortunately some people take advantage of the lax site-moderation, resulting in offensive and alarming posts like this. School Choirs to Perform Carols at Community Plaza

On Wednesday, December 20th, 2017 there will be two local choirs performing Christmas carols at the Community Plaza. At 10:30a.m. the Ellwood City Area School District Concert Choir will be performing, conducted by Felicia Greco, Senior High Choral Director, and at 11:30a.m. the Laurel Area School District Choir will be performing, conducted by Kristen Clingerman. Like all Community Plaza concerts, the event is free to attend.

Old Photo Friday: Borough Property Nativity Scene

Although the photos are not very old, they are certainly a thing of the past after a Wisconsin-based anti-religion group threatened to sue the Borough of Ellwood City in 2011 if they didn’t take down the traditional nativity display, which has since been absent from the property. The group, Freedom From Religion Foundation, promotes nontheism and defends the constitutional separation between religion and government, their website states. The last year the nativity was standing on Borough property was in 2011, after the council members voted 4-2 in favor of removing the scene from municipal property beginning in 2012. A council…
