Top Floor of Old Boiler Room Taken Down

The tallest of the buildings being demolished on Lawrence Avenue, known previously as the Boiler Room, finally had the top floor removed yesterday. The building was structured with large steel beams that had to be carefully removed before it was able to be torn down to the same level as the other two old storefronts. Police cruisers blocked off a small portion of Lawrence Avenue to prepare for the collapse in case any debris fell into the roadway, none of which did. BC3 Receives Third $1M Commitment in Past 38 Months

Butler, PA – Butler County Community College announced Friday a $1 million commitment from Janice Phillips Larrick, matching the two highest gifts in BC3’s 52-year history and representing the third such donation in the past 38 months. Ellwood City PD Thank Veterinary Office for Money Raised

The Ellwood City Police Department released the following thank you to the Ellwood City Veterinary Practice for their help to raise money for canine officer Ranger: A big thank-you to Dr. Cindi Maro and Dr. Daniel Jones for raising funds for the purchase of a GPS tracking device for Ellwood City Police K9,  Ranger. The raising of funds were held in conjunction with the EC Fall Festival. Dr. Maro opened the Ellwood City  Animal Hospital 30 years ago, September 26, 1987. Thanks to the courtesy of the Ellwood City Historical Society, they have provided us with a box full of old photos that we will now be using for Old Photo Friday! Today’s feature is the 95ft cake served on Lawrence Avenue in 1987 for the town’s 95th birthday celebration. Sick Puppy Given Away with Dog Crate

Gentle Ben’s Giant Breed Rescue, a dog rescue in Zelienople, recently acquired a very unhealthy 11 week old puppy who was given away with a dog crate that was being sold. “Kelly, a very good friend mine, saw this sweet boy on some type of farm ad where the owner was selling a crate and said a puppy came with it. The ad indicated the puppy was a Fila Brasilerio, which is a type of mastiff. Lion’s Club Fountain Reappears After Years of Absence

After years of absence, the Lion’s Club water fountain is back in Ellwood City – bigger and better than ever! On the corner of Lawrence and Sixth, a brightly colored lion statue sits, donated by the kindness of one of the Lion’s Club founding member’s daughter. After nearly 30 years in the community, the old fountain had to be taken down due to wear and tear about 5 years ago. The club then started fundraising for a new fountain and the daughter of Floyd V. Domestic Human Trafficking Seminar: “Together We Can End This Modern Day Slavery”

Earlier this year, two Lawrence County men were charged with domestic human trafficking – an issue that Barb Bohizic, activist against human trafficking and co-founder of Stop Taking Advantage of the Needy, Disabled and Disadvantaged (STANDD), says happens a lot more in the community than people realize.
