Holy Redeemer Parish is celebrating 50 Golden Bazaar years starting Wednesday, July 27 and continuing through Saturday July 30. The bazaar’s rich and successful history was made possible by the work ethic of its parishioners and their dedication to serving their parish family and community but every successful initiative has a beginning and must be blessed with excellent leadership. In 1966, the parish’s Special Activities Group (SAG) provided the guidance needed, and were the driving force behind the annual bazaar as we know it today. Seats are still available for the Women’s Club of Ellwood City sponsored bus trip to Ohio Amish Country (Walnut Creek). The trip will be on Saturday, Aug. 13 and will depart from Christy’s Plaza at 8 a.m. and will return around 8 p.m. The trip will have shopping at the Walnut Creek Market where everyone will have a chance to buy many of the Amish Country Specialties (jellies, relish, cured meats, bulk food, bakery items and much more). Ellwood City Rotary Club’s annual Scholarship Dinner was, as always, a special night for Rotarians, guests, scholarship recipients and their families. The yearly event, which took place May 19 at the Connoquenessing Country Club, was conducted by master of ceremonies and Scholarship Committee chair Mark Smith. Each year, our Club presents academic scholarships to worthy Lincoln and Riverside high school students. A 2016 Genevieve Blank Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 was awarded to Riverside High School senior Shanna Ridgley. The Ellwood City Area Public Library will hold its annual book sale from October 3 through 8 this year, and is now accepting donations for the event. Books of all types will be accepted, both paperback and hardback. The sale generally features a large variety of fiction, non-fiction, history, sports, self-help, books on religion and spirituality, children’s books and much more. Also accepted are DVDs, audio books on CDs and music CDs. All books and donated items must be in good condition and may be taken to the library during regular business hours.
