Ellwood’s Petrak and Lott Advance to Track States

The 300 meter hurdles and 1600 meter run are two of the most physically taxing events in track and field. The hurdles not only requires one to sprint an extended distance, but navigate hurdles as well. The 1600 (approximately one mile) requires speed, endurance and a considerable amount of strategy to pace the four laps and outlast the competition. Ellwood has an athlete advancing in each event. Police: Shooting Meth and Hit and Run

Shooting Meth in a Parking Lot Two Beaver Falls men were arrested for meth use for an incident on May 10. According to the criminal complaint, at around 2:30 a.m. an officer observed a vehicle pulled to the side of a parking lot near Duncan Avenue. The officer observed the two men attempt to hide items. The men were identified as Erick Daniel Koah, 30, and Clinton P Klinesmith, 27, and they admitted to using meth. Notification of Tax Office Hours in June

Mary Ann Portugallo, Ellwood City tax collector, will open her office in the borough municipal building, 525 Lawrence Ave., from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays in June. In July, the office will return to regular hours – 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Wire-tapping in the workplace A Beaver man was accused of recording six coworkers in his office without their knowledge. According to the criminal complaint, on March 8, the victims confronted defendant Thomas Michael Greene, 55, when they heard their voices coming from his pocket. Greene informed police that he had misunderstood advice from his lawyer and was unaware the recorder was playing. He was arraigned before Magistrate Jerry Cartwright and accused of intercepting oral communication with a portable voice recorder. Confronting the Heroin/Opioid Epidemic in Pennsylvania

What: The Center for Rural Pennsylvania will hold its 10th public hearing to solicit testimony on confronting the heroin and opioid epidemic in Pennsylvania and how this epidemic is affecting our most rural counties. The hearing will be held at the Fez in Aliquippa, Pa. and will be hosted by State Senator Elder Vogel and State Senator Camera Bartolotta. ABATE Members Support Gibbons Legislation

HARRISBURG, May 23 – State Rep. Jaret Gibbons, D-Beaver/Butler/Lawrence, was recognized at a state Capitol rally by members of the Alliance of Bikers Aimed toward Education (ABATE) in support of his bill (H.B. 853), commonly referred to as Daniel’s Law. The bill, designed to toughen penalties for distracted driving accidents, was introduced in honor of Daniel Gallatin, a father, grandfather, military veteran and 40-year fireman. Stiefel Hockey League Seeking Donations for Rink

The Stiefel Hockey League is seeking donations from local businesses to cover the cost of constructing boards for the community hockey rink in Stiefel Park. Businesses that donate a minimum of $100 will have their name displayed on a sign outside of the rink listing sponsors. The boards are built by the league’s hockey players. Earlier this spring, the Ellwood City Borough Council repaved the rink. However, the siding had deteriorated and needed completely replaced.
