PHOTOS: Local School Districts Collaborate to Advance STEAM Programs

Earlier this month, on March 7th, Hartman Intermediate School’s Arts and Bots Club, part of the Ellwood City Area School District, traveled to Mohawk Elementary to showcase their robotic Dr. Seuss characters and to assist in starting an Arts and Bots Club at Mohawk School District. The Hartman Arts and Bots Club, consisting of twenty 5th and 6th grade students, is under the direction of Alan Marsh, Elementary Art teacher, Scott Setzenfand, STEAM Facilitator, and Matt Skoczylas, Elementary Technology teacher. Ellwood City Borough Council March Meeting Brief

The following is a brief summary of the Ellwood City Borough Council meeting held on Monday, March 19: Visitors: Numerous visitors urged council to reconsider charging organizations event costs to recoup borough expenses. One visitor requested that council hire a borough manager capable of effective grant writing and said the costs of most events could be covered by grants. He also praised Council President Judi Dici for acting as interim manager on “pittance” money. Portersville Christian School Information Night/Open House

Portersville Christian School will hold an information Night/Open House on Tuesday April 3, 2018 at 7:00 pm for families interested in enrolling students for the 2018-2019 school year. The school is accepting student applications and registrations prior to the release of next year’s tuition schedule at the end of March 2018. In addition to kindergarten, there are openings in most grade levels for fall 2018. Council: No Events to Be Charged and Cost Estimates Greatly Reduced

During its meeting on Monday, council voted to allow all requested events in 2018 at no charge. In edition, the estimated borough costs for events provided last week was recalculated at significantly lower rates. In February, council announced the Ellwood City Relay for Life would be charged $550 to recoup borough expenses and that all other borough events would be required to pay borough expenses. Local Author Plans Book Signing

Local author Nancy K. Wallace is celebrating the publication of her third and final book in the Wolves of Llisé trilogy with a book-signing event at the Ellwood City Library on Friday, March 23, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Pittsburgh Steelers to Play Basketball Game at Lincoln High School

For the first time in several years, the Pittsburgh Steelers will be playing a basketball game at Lincoln Junior Senior High School. The LHS Caring Team is sponsoring the event in which current and former members of the Pittsburgh Steelers will play against a team of Ellwood City Area School District faculty members and some players from this year’s boys basketball team. Mayor’s Advisory Committee Monthly Meeting Recap

On March 8, 2018 the Mayor’s Advisory Committee met in Council Chambers. The Mayor stressed the importance of being aware of your surroundings especially at night, to combat crime. Discussed was the possibility of hiring another Police Officer.  The Mayor advised that the Borough is employing many ways to attack crime, preventive measures.  Some of these preventive measures have led to many drug arrests, 422 since Court has taken office.  One of the new measures is “Perception is Everything” and commands immediate attention. Police: New Castle Man Charged with Viewing Child Pornography

According to the criminal complaint filed on March 6, Steven Robert Nerone, 35, of 1704 E Washington St, New Castle, was charged with dissemination of child pornography. In February 2017, state police investigated a report from Microsoft that a Skype user had uploaded a known picture of child pornography. State police requested a subpoena to be issued to Comcast for an IP address identification. The Comcast report identified the IP user as Nerone. In October, police obtained a search warrant and interviewed the suspect. In December, police seized Nerone’s hard drive and thumb drive and located over 450 pictures and…
