Former Council President Criticizes Council for Wasting Electric Bond Funds

At Monday’s Ellwood City Borough Council meeting, former council president Connie MacDonald criticized the current council’s decision to stop construction on a new electric building. The building would have been located between Franklin Avenue and Park Avenue Extension and would have been paid for with a 2017 bond issue for over $2 million dollars. At a special meeting on Feb. 1, the new council voted 5-2 to suspend construction, with previous council members George Celli and Michele Lamenza casting the dissenting votes. Lady Panthers Fall To Seton LaSalle In WPIAL Playoffs

The Riverside Girls Basketball team fell to Seton LaSalle Rebels 50-48 in their first round of the WPIAL Class 3A basketball playoffs Wednesday at North Hills High School. After a Rebel missed free throw with 6 seconds left, the Lady Panthers hurried to get a final shot off that misfired. Lauren Bettencourt sparked Riverside with 17 points in the contest including a 3-pointer with 10.1 seconds left that pulled the Panthers within the two point margin. 2018 Historical Society Scholarship Awards Announced

The Ellwood City Area Historical Society will award the Robert and Janice Barensfeld Scholarships of $1,500.00 each to two (2) graduating seniors in 2018 who have been accepted into an institution of higher learning. (i.e. 4 year, Trade School or Performing Arts) Please note the following requirements. 2018 graduating students from Lincoln High School and Riverside High School are eligible. The following is a brief summary of the Ellwood City Borough Council meeting held on Feb. 19, 2018. **Updated Feb. 21 at 8:00 p.m. Visitors Brian Bush, of the Ellwood City Revitalization Committee, presented council with a check for $200,000 from the Hoyt Foundation. Police: Man Tased While Attempting to Flee Police

Man Tased While Attempting to Flee Police According to the criminal complaint, on Feb. 10 at approximately 3:00 a.m., an officer observed a jeep traveling at a high rate of speed in the area of Crescent Avenue and Seventh Street. The investigating officer activated the patrol car’s emergency signals, but the jeep didn’t pull over. Police pursued the jeep to the 300 block of Wayne Avenue where the suspect parked. Another Scam Targeting Elderly Reported

According to information made available this morning by the Borough of Ellwood City, Mayor Court wanted to once again warn residents that another scam is circulating through the Ellwood City area, targeting the elderly for money claiming that a relative is in trouble with the law. If you get a phone call like this or if you have elderly people living in the area, please warn them of this scam and advise them to call the Police. NEVER give out their financial information to anyone unless they are certain of the caller. Be safe and protect our elderly from these scammers!

Three Wolverine Wrestlers Place In WPIAL Championships

Three Ellwood City Wolverine Wrestlers Placed in the WPIAL Championships this weekend.  The Championship finals featured 23 wrestlers currently ranked Top 25 in Pennsylvania. Austin Walley used a decision victory over Austin Mele, Burrell, 4-2, to take 3rd place in the 170-pound consolation match.  Walley had ousted Quaker Valley’s Keegan Forsythe in his opening round match, but fell in a decision to Jaden Detz, of Southmoreland, in the semifinals of the 170-pound division. Donavan Chambers also was victorious in his consolation bout with a 10-3 decision over Josh Agnew, Jefferson-Morgan.  Chambers wrapped up 5th place in the 132-pound consolation match….

Riverside Advances, Wolverines Fall in WPIAL Opening Round Action

The 12-seeded Riverside Panthers knocked off Burrell 32-27 Friday Night in Class-3A WPIAL opening round playoff action. Ty Thellman led Riverside with nine points while Donovan Russell led Burrell with 11.
