The 2nd Avenue Project Performs at The Final Community Concert Season Event

The Ellwood City Community Stage closed its concert season this Saturday with The 2nd Avenue Project. The 2nd  Avenue Project is a horn band known for playing funk, rock and soul from Ohio and western Pennsylvania. The group played a variety of music Saturday night including songs like “Saturday in the Park” and “Make Me Smile” by Chicago. The group plays more than 45 concerts a year with the summer being its busiest time. VIDEO: Back Home With Stephen Johns

The 26-year-old Dallas Star and Wampum native Stephen Johns takes his viewers on a tour of his hometown in this published video made available on NHL.com presented by Kia. The 6’4″ 221-pound defenseman finished with 15 points and a plus-10 rating in 75 games last season for the Dallas Stars. Johns played four seasons at Notre Dame, scoring 15 goals and 57 points in 164 games, and led the team to the 2013 Central Collegiate Hockey Association Tournament title. Johns and the Stars play the Pittsburgh Penguins just once this regular season –– Wednesday, November 21st at PPG Paints Arena.

Venezie Sporting Goods & Apparel Announces Scholarships

Venezie Sporting Goods & Apparel is starting a scholarship for students in both Ellwood City and Riverside School Districts to start. Vanessa Venezie, operations manager of Venezie Sporting Goods & Apparel and the assistant girls varsity basketball coach for Lincoln High School, came up with the idea of starting a scholarship all while sitting at her brother Luca Botti’s graduation ceremony from LHS this past June. “While sitting at my brother’s graduation I realized there weren’t many scholarships for athletes who also excelled in the classroom,” Venezie said. “I remembered when I was in school there was a scholarship offered…

If you currently have a Handicapped Sign in front of your address, the Ellwood City Police Department needs you to renew/update your information. From Residents: Name, address, phone number, and a copy of your Placard number, Handicapped Card number or Handicapped License Plate information including the expiration date. Over 37 million people in 16,124 communities celebrate America’s National Night Out against crime. National Night Out,  began in 1984 in an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. Ellwood City Library Activities for Week of August 13

The Ellwood City Area Public Library offers a variety of weekly activities.  Information is available by calling the library at 724-758-6458. REPORT: Wolverine Football hoping to take advantage of move down to Class-2A

According to a publish report this week by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Tri-State Sports & News Service, Ellwood City football will be looking to take advantage of a WPIAL reclassification this year. The offense returns eight starters, including QB Ryan Gibbons (5-10, 170, So., QB), while the defense will return seven starters, including senior LB Coulton Cunningham (5-9, 175, Sr., OL-MLB).  A trio of running backs also return for the Wolverines as Rick Petrelli, Rocco Sesti and Donovan Chambers will lead the charge. REPORT: New faces on defense need to make an impact for Riverside

According to a publish report this week by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Tri-State Sports & News Service, the Riverside Panthers will use new faces on defense in hopes of continuing its string of consecutive playoff appearances. Riverside finished with a 9-3 record last year, but lost 16 seniors, and returns only two starters on defense in cornerback LeMarcus Cleckley (6-0, 175, Sr., RB-DB) and lineman Jarrett Speer. The offense returns junior Ben Hughes (6-2, 200, Jr., QB), who led the an offense that averaged 33.8 points per game last season. Cleckley will move into the featured back role after racking up 930…
