Wolverines Upset Bid Falls Short, Defeated by Deer Lakes In Overtime Thriller

Senior Joseph Roth eclipsed a career scoring milestone Thursday night, but the #9 seeded Wolverines were knocked off by defending champion Deer Lakes 39-38 in overtime on a buzzer beater. The Wolverines led by as many as seven points early in the fourth quarter, and by as many as five points in overtime but missed layups and continued turnovers spelled doom for Ellwood City. Ellwood Quality Steels Celebrates Milestone

ELLWOOD Quality Steels (EQS) on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, celebrated a significant milestone by producing the 250,000th heat in the melt shop that opened in 1985. A heat is a batch of steel that is melted in the 45-ton electric arc furnace and poured into molds to create bottom-poured ingots. POLICE: Weekly Police Blotter

THEFT: On February 14th at approximately 2:30 a.m., PA State Police were dispatched to a residence in the 300 block of Reserve Square, Wayne Township for a report theft from a motor vehicle. According to the report, a known victim, 29-year-old male, reported that he had reviewed video surveillance of his property and there was an unknown actor(s) observed near his vehicles. After checking his property, it was discovered that items were stolen from his flatbed tow truck and from the tool box on his trailer the report relates. Lincoln Graduate Accepted to Prestigious Drum and Bugle Corps

Zion Bunney is making his Drumming Dreams come true, but he needs a little help from his friends … the Ellwood City Community. The 2022 Lincoln High School graduate was accepted to the world class drum and bugle corps “Jersey Surf,” a group that competes in a circuit called Drum Corps International (DCI). Upstart Manufacturers Coalition Awarded $236,000 Grant from PA Dept of Labor and Industry

MERCER – A collaboration of local manufacturers, including two from Ellwood City, working together to address shared workforce development challenges was awarded a $236,786 grant from the Industry Partnership program of the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. The award was announced by Rep. Parke Wentling (R-Mercer). The Lawrence Mercer Manufacturers Coalition (LMMC) was formed in 2023 by founding members Berner International, Blair Strip Steel Company, ELLWOOD, G.W. Becker, Inc., Hall Industries and Wheatland Steel Processing. Allen, Lilly Collect 2nd Place Finishes At WPIAL Sectionals

Wolverines junior wrestlers Derek Allen and Gabe Lilly each collected second place finishes in their respective weight classes at the District 7 Class 2A Sectionals this past Saturday at Greensburg Salem High School. After receiving an opening round bye, Allen, who is now 25-8 on the season, used victories by pinfall and decision to earn a place in the 121-pound championship match. Allen was pinned and defeated by Luca Rosa of Burrell in the championship. Wolverines Beat Washington 53-36, Advance To Quarterfinals

A strong second quarter propelled the Wolverines to a 53-36 victory over Washington Monday night in its WPIAL 3A opening round playoff contest. After a fast paced first frame that saw Ellwood City lead 17-11, the Wolverines held the Prexies scoreless for more than half the second quarter to separate and extend its lead to 29-15 at intermission. Two third quarter 3-pointers by Nate Williams and 10 second half points by Joseph Roth helped the Wolverines secure the victory. Council Approves YMCA Swimming Pool Management Agreement with No Cost Increase to Community

Ellwood City Borough Council approved the 2024 YMCA swimming pool management agreement for $13,800. Borough Manager Kevin Swogger said there will be no cost increase for community members to use the pool this year and the borough will be releasing more details regarding the pool’s 2024 season as well as activities planned including youth parties and featured DJs. Swogger said the borough is also working on securing the America250PA grant, which helps organizations conducting projects that improve the community and engages volunteers. Projects could include community cleanups, park improvements, revitalization efforts, river sweeps, graffiti abatement, murals, etc. The project must…
